As far as I know, MK1s are serials starting with "700x" which later became "SZ1". There's the Japanese domestic champagne/brown and the US market silver/black. The MK2/A is "SZ2" which is silver/black in Japan and all black in the US. Keep in mind that Stax calls it's domestic amps "A" and export amps "II". I think that's where people might be confusing differences between MK2 versions where there aren't any. The so called "MK2.5" is serials "SZ3". According to Spritzer the tonal balance was shifted quite a bit on SZ3 versions which are supposed to be considerably brighter.

I've never heard of a silver / black mk1. To my knowledge, the ones for both Japan and the US were champaign with brown leather, and the ones for Europe were champaign with black leather (aka "007BL". The silver with black leather is the Japanese mk2 (aka "007A") and the all black (aka "007mk2") is the US version.

I was talking about the 007mk2 versus 007A versions of the SZ2 specifically. Some people insist there's a difference: ie. Stax released the 007mk2 first in export markets and then based on impressions of it tuned the 007A slightly for their domestic market. I've heard stories about the bass being better on the 007A, on it sounding more like the mk1, etc. Sometimes the very same individuals saying one thing were saying completely different, contradictory things prior. Personally I don't recall hearing a difference between the 007A and mk2.

I haven't heard the SZ3 yet, but I've seen the same range of claims about it.

Personally I take these kinds of things with a grain of pepper.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

I did see one for sale on Audiogon once, a silver/black MK1 that was a US market headphone.

From what spritzer's written, I think he said the SZ3 uses the same diaphragm as the 009.  Not sure what that actually means in terms of the sound signature, though.  I've read a lot of conflicting reports about the SZ3 so I'm not really sure what to believe about it.

Bought the KGSSHV boards last night, and will start ordering parts today :)

Something must have been up with it, ie. a mislabel or the color was skewed... because as far as I know, there was never a silver and black mk1.

European MK1 were no different from the US or Japanese ones. BL was produced in limited qty for a German dealer that requested it.

Yamas bought the last of the stock Japan had of the BL when they (all MK1) were discontinued.

It's a good price and he's a good seller - only issue is he's in Dubai and shipping's a mess (I would have bought more than one thing from him in the past if that wasn't the case.)

Seems like a nice price with shipping and Paypal included!  Still kind of wish I jumped on seacard's BA, but I don't need three different headphone setups to listen to :(

Btw, a bit off topic, but why have a few people tried to trade down from their BA to a ZD, aside from money considerations?  I heard a Zana at the Bay Area meet and it didn't really grab me with the HD600 or LCD2.2.

I have no idea, other than tube cost - but a good set of tubes lasts for ages.  The ZD is definitely good, but the BA is terrific.

So, someone on HF asked me to run to SFO to a store called InMotion Entertainment that's located in a bunch of airport terminals all over the country. Apparently they have Westone 4's on sale for $220. Just a heads up.
