This is a MUST SEE for anyone interested in rock music. I was rather shocked so many of of my favorite recordings (especially the ones which sounded particularly good in terms of resolution and tone) were recorded at this place.  Yes, I'm guilty of liking Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine, Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar, and even that one track from Rick Springfield.

The last third of the movie, after the closure of Sound City where Mr. Grohl purchases the Neve Console, does start to be a little less interesting. LOL, I'm not a big fan of the foo-fighters sound (Paul McCartney + foo fighters, Stevie Nicks + foo fighters, etc.), but kudos to Mr. Grohl for saving and continuing to use a glorious piece of rock history.

Luis was born in the wrong time. He could have been that guy dusting the consoles and getting sandwiches for people while working his way up to engineer and producer.

Is Grohl using that gear at his home studio or is it at studio 606?

Classic Grohl explanation of recording a record in his garage! http://www.nme.com/news/foo-fighters/54702#

He moved the console to 606. The deal with Trent Reznor toward the end was cool. Someone who uses technology to create rather than as a crutch.

It is sad to see digital take over and make the old process more or less unnecessary. I do think something is lost - the human touch. I'm sure the objectivists are happy. They would have cringed when they saw tubes in the Neve 8028. Because we all know Fleetwood Mac, GNR, Tom Petty, and Slipknot recordings have massive 2nd order harmonic distortion.

Found time to watch this tonight. FANTASTIC!

Have to admit Foo Fighters/Nirvana is one of my favorite kinds of band sounds.

I now want to listen to the last Foo Fighters album to understand what 'analog' means for their sound.  popcorn

Purrin pretty much nailed the assessment of this movie.

I tend to split my free time between reading songfacts (wikipedia, etc.) about band trivia, obsessing on the recording process and/or lusting after gear.  This movie was right up my alley.

Over on gearslutz this movie is about as polarizing as the objective v subjective debate.  I personally saw the movie as an ode to a bygone era peppered with comments of a few opinionated analog folks.  I personally don't tend to see a problem with the way music is made now vs how it was made then but, it was cool to hear the stories.
