Anyway, I like the idea of a transformer as a gain device.

Might make for an interesting sound, similar to tube amps without their distortion. The real question is whether it will have enough feedback to do that and not roll off.

Never mind, he's using a servo instead, excellent choice. It should sound pretty similar to the Leckerton being a DC-coupled design too, but more rollable, because every transformer sounds different, much more different than from one opamp to another. Should be very easy to DIY, because all parts except the output stage are discrete and don't have to be matched at all.
Another upside is that it can source enormous amounts of current, so should be quite capable of driving very low impedances, perhaps even speakers.

I snagged that last PCB. Finding a case might be a pain in the butt. But I've wanted to recase my ES9018 DAC with a matching headamp so maybe something custom is in my future.

I sincerely hope he has some boards in the future >_>

DSHA-1 came in last Thursday, but I had a serious dearth of free time to get any real listening done until the last couple days.  The skinny is it is very good.  I don't really like solid state for dynamics very much (meh on B22, Burson, Violectric, liked the LAu and to a lesser extent the GS-X) so this was interesting.  It doesn't really sound like any solid state I've heard before.

This amp is not coltish.  Or, not colt 45-ish.  It doesn't grab you with slamming dynamics that hit like a truck.  It has a softness to the edges, not really a blur of details per se but... well, it sounds more like a tube amp than any competent SS I've heard.  Still sounds accurate and has great clarity like good SS but definitely has an unmistakable tube sound to it.  (Apparently it uses a tube output stage topology with mosfet in place of tube, so it seems this is sort of by design.)  Like the Black Diamond it is very quiet, but seems like it puts out less power.  At full attenuation it was driving the HP-1's super hard but I suspect they won't be a great match for the LCD-3 (out on loan at the moment.)  This amp didn't blow me away with soundstage either, it struck me as better than average but not on par with say the LAu, though I guess I'll have to go back and compare with the same headphones.

Macro shot of the wood grain.  More Pics

Obviously a lot of the "tube" sound has to do with the involvement of wood in the build.  Most metal amps sound stark and uninviting by comparison.  The DSHA-1 uses tone wood to give it a natural musky sound.

This is all with stock (better than average but still not crazy) PS.  I'll be updating it soon-ish (I'll be in Chicago for Axpona, maybe I'll drop it off by Doug then.)

I don't normally do stuff like this, always seems like I'm hyping something up, but Doug payed me, so I'm writing a review and will be starting a blog on my vitally important headphone journey shortly Doug deserves it.

I had a chance to hear this a while back. Really nice with Grados, even of the Joe variety. I imagine a great match with the TH900. Good with LCD3, but the LCD3 really does need moar power.

Just discovered you updated this, Tari. Thanks for the impressions on the DSHA-1. It sounds like a very interesting amplifier indeed; I hope to get a chance to listen to it at some point.

Seems like a lot of designers are going for gobs of power when it comes to headphone amps. Which definitely has its place. However it's nice to hear about an amp that plays so nicely with extremely sensitive headphones and is so very quiet.

If I'm not mistaken, this amp has a single XLR output? Does it come with an adapter to use single ended?

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Yes, I really like it's level with the Grados and would be wary of upping the gain personally but here's what Doug told me about that:

"there are jumpers on the inside to change the IPT from 1:2 to 1:4 if you want more gain (I think it is set at 1:2). Doubling the gain makes it 4x harder to drive, but so long as your source has a decent output stage it should not be an issue, basically no 12ax7 cathode followers. The gain is the limit here as the circuit can swing way more voltage than you'll ever need. Actually should swing more than the BD, and the transformers in the DSHA can handle a higher signal. But gain is lower.  At least one person uses it with LCD's (can't remember if they are 2's or 3's). Also, with higher Z phones, the switch on the front will increase gain up to 6db depending on the load (with Low Z it serves as more of a tone/presence control.)"

It came with adapters on both ends - metal plugs that allow you to plug it into a source via RCAs, and an adapter for the headphones to be able to plug in standard TRS.

Black Diamond is interesting with IEMs... I'm listening with the JH13FP's right now, and its always silent rare-medium.  When you really get loud, there is a bit of noise floor with some recordings but not others.  Nelson Friere playing Chopin has a bit of hiss on it, while Innocence Mission's "Birds of the Neighborhood" has zero at any volume that I can hear.  You can also really hear through to the DAC.  I'm listening with the Modi at the moment and it does have some weird glitch noises (much more often than I'm comfortable with) that are harder to hear with the Mjolnir but are super obvious with the Black Diamond (come to think of it, maybe that's where some of the noise is coming from in general, I'll switch over to the Invicta or Mytek later and see if that makes a difference.

What's so cool about this amp?  Well, it is the only headphone amp I know of (Ari may have also experimented with this) that uses transformers for voltage gain rather than tubes or transistors (solid state.)  [Steve Eddy seems to be working on something similar but his facebook page where he updates the project has gone radio silent recently.]

I designed an amp based on voltage gain by transformers back in 2010  :P

No commercial amps or PCB's available.
It was just for the fun of it to see how it would behave.

You appear to have achieved some formidable performance with that amp. The frequency response alone is impressive.  p;)

Well, looks like I'm going to have Doug's full lineup.

Doug/ECP is having a moving sale of 30% off on L-2's and 20% off on DSHA-1's.  I'll be ordering an L-2 as he described that as his "Sennheiser Amp" with the DSHA-1 being his "Grado amp" (though they're both great with other headphones too.)  I guess I'll have to post a cross-lineup comparison when I get it as we Jews aren't allowed to keep people hanging overnight.

Also received the DSHA back with PS upgrade (no longer for sale, I'm going to compare it with the L-2 over the next while) so looking forward to putting in some listening time when I get a chance.

Well, the upgraded PS DSHA-1 is more silent with CIEMs than the BD, and makes the UERM's in particular sound more seductive than they normally do (standard disclaimer which is not to say syrupy and slow).  Better than average with the Audeze orthos but definitely on the polite side, seemingly both in presentation and power output.  Definitely not kicking arses and taking names with orthos like the LG but I don't think it would claim that's its sweet spot, at least without changing the stock gain.

L-2 incoming this week.

Thanks for the continuing impressions. Really looking forward to reading what you have to say about the L-2.
