Maybe edgier treble is not the way to describe it but the BD treble is still harder on my ears.  Case in point I listened to some horribly mastered trance from 2008; it's a tough listen on both amps but the BD is ever so slightly harsher in the high end.   BD seems softer in the lower regions but more prominent in mid bass, tossup for preference of the amps dependent on the track.

I also had issues (prototype blue acrylic unit) but think it more in the upper mid region whereas the GSX is higher up in the treble zone.  Is it more rough and scratchy than sharp and piercing?

Yep, neither amp is really "piercing" to me or even fatiguing for that matter.  Been at it all day. The more I think about what Maxvla wrote (great write up btw), I chalk it up to the HD800 FR.  Too bad I don't have the real-estate for a Rag.
