Digital usb audio out of iphone, ipod
« on: January 15, 2013, 02:29:14 AM »

Why isn't this easier?  Seems like it should have happened a long time ago.  Clearly it's possible.  A few devices are able to do it.  The Camera connection kit works with ipad, and can output digital audio.  I read that the camera connection kit worked with the iphone with iOS5 beta, but Apple disabled it upon official release.

Why are they preventing people from getting USB audio out of idevices?  Maybe it's just a product of their closed system and they are unaware there's a group of people who would like to do this?

Kind of unbelievable what untapped potential there is here for portable audio with the many good portable dac/amps that take USB and all the iDevices out there. I've been waiting for this to happen but getting impatient.

I guess the Camera Connection Kit company is trying to hack the iphone into accepting it.  I don't understand why it's this difficult.

Yup, it's the simple closed vs. open system. Meaning, should you allow functionality? NO! It could be worth something! Even if you never do get around to capitalizing on it.

I'm sure if some company came along and payed tribute to the golden apple that they would allow a "digital audio output" adapter, at least one that isn't already an ipod base-station. In fact I'm surprised that Audioquest currently doesn't offer one (for 99$ with solid silver contacts).

There is an app out there that has worked for some but from reading it seemed flakey and I didn't bother trying

But why disable a feature that adds usability?  Seems like they are trying hard to keep their iDevices from being useful.  They're not like that with their computers, at least not to that extent.

Or is it a money issue?  Does the Fostex HP-P1 cost 900 dollars because they have to pay Apple 400 dollars per unit?  And the camera connection is too cheap?  I have a hard time believing that, as they profit off the device having more usability with a new audience.  Seems this would open up the devices to a whole range of audio and visual uses.

It's very strange that a few companies are able to do it.

Apple needs to make sure their Geniuses at the Stores know how to figure it out. It needs to work well under all conditions to meet Steve Jobs requirements for usability. There aren't enough people right now requesting to use USB out from the iPhone to warrant expenditure of R&D + testing.

The CLAS and HP-P1 are so expensive because any digital out needs special authentication chips provided, signed, and purchased from Apple. In addition, these chips must be included in the design of any dock that is compliant. (cheaper docks usually get around this by taking the line-out signal instead)

Apple designed it this way for security purposes. It keeps anyone with malicious intent from transferring data freely.
unfortunately, this includes bit-streaming audio...

The line out signal is analog, so it's a completely different thing.

That makes some sense, but doesn't explain why the camera connection kit works with ipad and not iphone/ipod

There are actually differences in the iOS code-base between Apple products. (thats why the ipad supports home-screen gestures and the iPhone doesn't)

My speculation is proprietary pre-programmed authentication with limited functionality supported by the iPad but not iPhone/iPod. That would explain why not all USB-devices work with a CCK.

Also, (As far as I know) the CCK does not use the exact same chip as a CLAS...

So why would they intentionally disable the CCK with iphone/ipod but allow it on ipad?  That makes no sense.  I can't imagine it being buggy or anything if it works with the ipad.
