Camera Connection Kit...

was never designed as a full implementation of a USB port, IIRC.
Just made so photographers could use the iPad to organize and manage shots off-camera.

Apple has a vested interest in not having USB --> one must use itunes to transfer stuff.  *:p

Right, that comes back to the unintentional disabling of a feature they don't really know is wanted.

There's a lot more you could do with that than audiophile use though.  Audio and video professionals, like I said before, and that used to be Apple's thang.

I know what you're saying, but I reckon most serious AV pros would have better and more flexable gear than an iPhone.  :)p3

Yeah usually.  It still seems like something Apple would want to advertise.  Look, you can record in high quality with this little dongle dingus!  Look, Justin Bieber used it to record his last album!  They probably don't know about the portable amp/dacs.

How would a CCK allow someone to avoid itunes?

The CLAS and HP-P1 are so expensive because any digital out needs special authentication chips provided, signed, and purchased from Apple.

The HRT iStreamer takes a digital signal and it only costs around $200 which is relatively cheap compared to similar devices. Same with the Pure i20 which is $99.

I'm thinking that you're probably right on the other point, which is to disallow direct usb audio for security reasons.

My audio chain for casual listening at home is ipad mini (icloud) -> CCK -> usb to spdif -> DAC

Right. I should have said that they add to the price. for massproduced and cheap stuff like the pure i20, it couldn't cost more than ~$30 apiece. (for low volume CLAS and HP-P1? probably much higher.)

That's not avoiding itunes though, that's avoiding the crappy headphone jack on your ipad mini.

Unlikely given that the Camera Connection Kit only costs 30 dollars.  I don't see why it's necessarily a more expensive chip.  The only reason it doesn't work on the iphone is because the OS disables it.

I'm sure the CLAS uses a silver plated chip though.

So why would they intentionally disable the CCK with iphone/ipod but allow it on ipad?  That makes no sense.  I can't imagine it being buggy or anything if it works with the ipad.

Power. Apple doesn't want external devices blowing up its battery-life claims. Even on the iPad, the CCK won't link up with any device that it perceives as drawing more than 100mA. And it often makes mistakes. I was never able to use my old RSA Predator with the iPad, and it had an internal battery.

EDIT: it actually worked for about the first month that I had the first-gen iPad (just long enough for me to drop $200 on a custom LOD cable). The first OS update killed it.

Is the Leckerton officially "Made for iPad" certified, or are you using the Lightning to 30-pin dongle with the mysterious DAC in it?
