I think most so-called blind tests are conducted in a such way so that the person being tested fails.

This was not an easy test for Anax, but he was given a lot of time and latitude to play, pause, replay, switch, etc. on any particular test track. I think letting the test subject be able to relax and not be under a high pressure situation helps. We noted that fatigue sets in rather quickly.

My own tests (conducted by my wife) yielded similar results. I was much more familiar with both of these amps having been listening to them quite a bit in the past two days to the point where I could pick out certain tell-tale signs. But whether these amps sounded different was never the question. We wanted to isolate differences in sonic character.

Using tracks people don't know is a sure fire way to a 50/50 blind test unless one device is egregiously worse.  Another is to use a headphone that's not resolving.  No offense to anyone, but I'd probably fail having to use a HE500 or worse for the things I listen for in AB.

Impressive results Mike.  But I already knew about your golden labias.  Will be interesting to see how your non-blind impressions compare.

Too bad we can't do blind testing for headphones.  I'd love to do a resonance test for all my friends on HF.

I fail to see the point of this test. 2 very different implementations with different design goals, why would it be a surprise that they sound different? Now if the 2 measured almost exactly the same on every parameter imaginable that'd be something. (or if nwavguy had claimed they should be indistinguishable, which he hasn't since he's been gone since may.)

That's wouldn't be nice. Oh wait... I get it.

ROFL, neither do I.

I think Anax wants $500 from nwavguy tho. I just spent the entire night last night hooking up the thing because I saw a few "blind" tests performed on a few folks on HF. I figured, why not? Hehehehehe.

I assume you meant "golden lobes."  I would be quite surprised if Mike turned out to have labia of any color, much less gold.

That's not what NwAvGuy would like to 'hear'.  ;D
It's transparant ...

Ever increased C8 and C9 to 2200uF (from the original 220uF) in the O2 ?

disclaimer:
Let it be noted I never heard either amplifier and my remark above is merely a suggestion for a specific reason.

i'm not sure that any 2200uF/25V cap would have the required length under 16mm to fit inside the stock "portable" chassis size, short of going SMD.

i saw Yann Tierson in concert last Cinco de Mayo.  the sound was total garbage and too loud.  as much as it pains me to say this, some music is meant to be played on the hi-fi only.

The O2 would look more stylish with a cap sticking up through the chassis. I can give it a try.
