My preliminary O2/Odac vs Magni/Modi Comparison&Review
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:51:35 PM »

This is only what I've garnered so far after 3 or so hours of A/B'ing 4 volume-matched recordings, but I'll doubt it'll change much through my next week of testing.  Here's a preview of my Objective Combo vs Schiit Stack comparison.  Would be nice to take opinions from others who've heard them or what I could do differently with the layout of the review.

The Objective Combo

The Schiit Stack

The Review
They both perform too close to each other to make a difference.  The Schiit Stack looks better and costs less.  Get the Schiit Stack.

Was wondering how soon it would be before one of these comparos popped up in the real world. Good stuff.

Gotta say the Schiit stack looks better on your desk. If I was a woman in your office, it'd compel me to take my shirt off.

Who needs a stack when Leckerton UHA6 mkII works just as well? :)p12
(Maybe it lacks enough power for hungry orthos. We'll see, but I suspect it doesn't.)

Yes, the DAC does support 96kHz/24bit for your DVD/BD needs. (but I set it to 44.1k/24bit to avoid resampling on everything else)

I've AB'd it. It does leave FiiOs E7 and E17 way behind, edges it beyond the previous (owned) reference amp.
(But probably not warranting the 2.5x price difference. That Audiotrak Prodigy Cube soundcard is more than gold value.)

Most everyone has one of those HDA thingies with optical or coaxial out...

They may work "as well" as each other, but (by inherent qualities of each design) the stack trades portability for potentially better RF-shielding and the advantages that come with greater component size. Of course, implementation will ultimately decide sonic differences (same concept for O2+Odac vs. mini Schiit-Stack to begin with).

Is it thought that O2/Odac sounds as good as UHA6?

The general consensus is the amp in the UHA6s is better than the O2, but the Odac is better than the UHA6s dac (at least comparing USB).

As far as why someone would want the Schiit stack there are various reasons. Cheaper, 1/4" plug headphones, not wanting to deal with battery power, RF shielding. I love my UHA6s, and it's a good single solution, but that doesn't mean other solutions aren't viable in other people's setups.

I don't either, but I've yet to hear a professionally built O2. I would put the UHS a bit above O2, both having fair price/performance placement.
