I can't do this school thing anymore
« on: December 03, 2012, 01:31:01 PM »

I haven't consistently done homework since I was 12.  11 years later I'm pretty much incapable of doing anything before the morning it's due and sometimes not even then unless I have adderall and there's absolutely no means by which I can turn it in late or take a 0 on it.

Nowadays I just feel antagonized whenever I have shit due even if it's shit I enjoy reading or writing (which has been happening more often than not lately). I haven't checked my grades in about 2 years and I gave a friend of mine my login info for my school shit so he could register for classes for me because I find all of these things terrifying.

Despite all that I tend to enjoy my classes but have difficulty going to the ones that don't require attendance.  I've passed classes I've been to as little as 5 or 6 times and I fee like that's just vindicating me to keep these habits up.

I really hate a lot of my classmates.  Despite my literal inability to work most of the time I'm consistently able to engage a given text or write for a given prompt much better than most of them.  They just go off on stupid #socialjustice agendas they had going on before ever starting the course.  Most professors I've had have told me this at one point or another; I'm not trying to be vain.  What the hell?

I just want to drink and watch Star Trek all day.

I would always hate it when a professor decided to make the class a dialog between students, basically forcing everyone to participate and share their opinions. I felt like I was paying to hear the professor who actually has experience and some semblance of mastery over a given topic, not some jackass for whom being "well read" refers to the number of wikipedia articles (s)he skimmed. Also it was frustrating when a professor wasn't assertive and allowed certain students to railroad, taking over the class more or less with inane personal anecdotes and off topic questions. It usually resulted in there not being enough time to cover the actual material. By the same token, professors who lack dynamic range and basically recycle the same lecture over and over with an inability to deviate from narrowly defined parameters are just as bad.

I try to keep things flexible and open-ended, addressing questions and trying to make things as clear as possible, while at the same time not letting a particular student take up too much of the entire class time. That sort of thing is why we have appointments after class, not to mention an on-campus (student-run) tutorial service free of charge.

Regarding attendance, I've never implemented a strict "X number of absences = grade reduction" policy. Maybe that's because I was always having to miss class for medical reasons, and penalties for doing so seemed wholly unfair. Sure, most of the folks skipping class are just sitting on their asses playing videogames. But if you can demonstrate mastery over the material on exams and discussions, then it seems pointless to demand a physical presence at all times. I don't really see it as "not being fair" to the students who show up all the time like some of my colleagues. I mean, they're all paying for the class. We all have different learning styles and abilities. So long as someone isn't cheating I don't see a point in penalizing their not being in class.

For me, a couple of words of advice, get your shit up or get a job you like. The fact that you are leaving your friend to make decisions with your classes indicate that you are not in control of your life. Grab a hold and make decisions yourself for starters and commit to a schedule. If you must paste it on a wall or something as a visual reminder of what you need to do and get done. Maybe you need a change in your environment as well to get stuff done, I usually get studies done outside home as home for me holds too much distractions to get stuff done. Just make sure whatever you are doing, do it by yourself for yourself. Don't screw your life up.  Oops, more than a couple of words :S

Anyways, what the hell your professors mean by vain? LOL

@MF Re: Attendance: Yeah, I don't even function well during regular class hours and do most of my genuine learning at like 3AM in some secluded corner of campus with unplugged custom IEMs in my ears.  I don't learn anything from study groups or in-class activities.  I'm taking a class on Victorian Modernity that's completely discussion driven and it's complete ass.  On days where I haven't read the material before going in I leave knowing little more about the text.  On days where I have I wonder if people are bullshitting me when they say they have as well.  My poetry and Plato classes are about 50/50 between discussion and lecture and they're both pretty good because the professors are good (the Plato one also has an attendance policy similar to yours).

Anyways, what the hell your professors mean by vain? LOL

I brought up my professors telling me I'm better than most to demonstrate that I wasn't just saying that out my ass to be vain or arrogant or whatever.  Unprovoked, they've pretty much all told me I do really great work... but it's a shame I only did like half of it or turned all my shit in a month or two late.  It frustrates me to know end to see someone with sticky notes all up in a book I didn't even bother to buy spouting off complete shit about it and it happens all the time.

And yeah, I have no mastery over my life whatsoever.  I have one class left before I can graduate and I plan on just working for awhile (which I've never had issues with) and trying to purge some of the crazy out of my system before attempting grad school, which I guess is like the real college now.

If school is, well, as you describe it, why go to graduate school?  Why not seek out what it is in life that will get you off the couch and excited to do something?  I'm not trying to come across like a life coach here, but it always makes me wonder why so many people stay in bad relationships, stay in school when they hate it, or work a job that they can't stand.  Yeah, yeah, there is all those folks who didn't choose to end up in the job they are in, blah blah blah...

I'm not saying you need to do anything special, just do what makes you relatively happy and provides the means to live the life style you crave.

I'm guessing with you ability to excel with little effort, if you find the right thing, you're going to excel.

Does school present a [positive] challenge to you?

What was the last thing you did that made you feel satisfied/happy?

P.S. I can totally relate to what you are saying. I've spent most of my [25 years] life in a very similar state of affairs.

To answer both those questions: somewhat often/recently, but that feeling of antagonism is there all the time and doesn't feel related to the specific task at hand.

I might be taking a 0 on something today because I accidentally woke up 5 hours too late to do it.

I've been there, done that, quit, started working and now I want to get back on track again...

Find something you like and become the best. Just make sure it has the right appeal to you regarding your intelligence and preferences.

I just have to seriously prepare myself for university, among others...

I just want to drink and watch Star Trek all day.

I don't particularly like school either, even if I'm covering topics I'm interested in. I just want to play video games, watch TV shows and movies, read, explore outside, and take things easy in general. I really, really like procrastinating and being lazy 95% of the time.

Unfortunately, that's not really an option for me (and most others).

If you're not happy with your situation, change it. If you're not happy with your work ethic and the like, change it. If you can't do it on your own, seek help and try to get yourself to a position in which you can make these necessary life changes on your own.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but YOU are in control of YOUR life. Sometimes you just have to kick yourself in the ass regularly to get your shit together. I've met very few people who are truly incapable of managing their own life. Most people just make excuses, claim to be "different" (aren't we all?), complain, and then proceed to do little to nothing about it.

I've been through similar situations, and I've had several friends in a similar (or worse) boat than you. You're the only one that can figure out what's best for you. Once you figure that out...just do everything you can to reach that. That might even include a radical, sudden change in your life! It can be daunting, but you can either tackle it or go back to square one over and over.

As simple as it sounds, write out a schedule of everything you need to do. Be very specific. And then follow it. If you don't, you have no one to blame but yourself. Make to-do lists. Be actionable. Etc.

Blah, blah...yeah, I know this is just a typical laundry list. Best of luck to you in figuring all this shit out. It isn't always easy or fun, but you're ultimately in charge.

Not sure if you're joking, but if this is really all you are motivated to do then the problem isn't school.  Sounds like you need to do something to get some perspective and get motivated.  There's no point in being in school if you have no motivation or direction.  Maybe you need to either travel or work a shitty job.  The former would give you perspective and the latter probably a kick in the pants.  I think taking time off from school is generally a good thing as long as you don't just sit around smoking pot or something.
