Current Temptations Thread
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:33:39 PM »

http://www.moon-audio.com/headphone-audio/burson-audio/burson-conductor-headphone-amplifier-preamp-and-dac.html

Despite being a bit critical of its sound quality and synergy with other headphones*, I like my current HA160D for its versatility in my "TV/Couch rig."  I have it connected to my PC via a long USB cable and the pre-out leads to a Yamaha receiver for my PSB Imagine Minis and Sub Series 1.  I find its form-factor perfect in that it's heavy enough to stay put as I occasionally move my table around and short enough not to obstruct my view of the TV/monitor (I can also put shit on top of it).  So, needless to say, a better sounding DAC and amp with the same form factor seems really appealing to me right now.  Especially since the aforementioned rig gets used a lot more often than my "serious" bedside one**, which I have no real space for anywhere else.

I'm thinking of putting up an IC for my HA160D and Lyr (which I never use) and ordering this if I get any bites.

* Great for the orthos I own; alright with the TH900's when I want something really, really lush, yet fast (EAR HP4-esque, except not quite there); crap with a lot else (especially the HD800's).

** W4S DAC2 -> WA22 (soon to be ECBA) or Lehmann BCL (when I just feel like using SS or the TH900's, which the amp pairs wonderfully with) -> headphones.

What's tempting you guys?

Looks like you should be owning two EC amps.

The perennial: BHSE

The newbie: TH900.  If this ever drops to less than a "charge what we can get away with" price, I am all over it.

The non-audio: Iphone 5.  My iphone 4 is all sorts of busted.

Interesting that you mention the Lehmann, as I just sent an email to Sunil asking him if he had one I can come up and listen to.

More generally, I am in search of the Little Black Amp.  If you've been following the thread on HF, you know that I have spent the last two weeks in smokin' hot boy-on-DAC action with my new Resonessence Concero.  It's a keeper.  The only problem is that it's reallllly tiny (10x10x2 cm).  It looks ridiculous next to the big hulking Bryston BHA-1.  And while I like the Bryston, it's not the only good-sounding amp in its price range.

So here's what I'm looking for: a sub-$1,600 solid-state or hybrid SE headphone amp, less than 20 cm wide and 10 cm high, that will equal or beat the Bryston (yes, I rigged the price point so as not to exclude the Cary HH-1). Class A is a plus.  Assembled in China is a minus.  I know about Cary, Lehmann, Audio Electronics (the Cary sub-brand), Musical Fidelity, Violectric/Lake People, Meier, and Heed.  What else am I missing that I should check out?
