Apple can stuff it. Design-wise exterior and software look great but I would prefer a humble Sansa DAP that is more functional than pleasing to the eye. The 160 Gigabyte Classic is the only DAP of theirs that's actually worth its money i.m.o.

Thing is I don't want to work with iTunes. I also have this problem with the supposedly good old Sony DAPs given the specifications are great but the proprietary software issues make me stay away. Oh well...

haha even with the sonicstage 4.3 it is still crap xD i use it with my E016 and S203/205f and i prefer itunes over it.

although the new walkman series with android just needs drag and drop now, no need for that nasty sonicstage

Ever worked with Nokia software for transferring multimedia? After a few days I gave up and removed the software from my PC, fuck it. I thoroughly detest it when companies force you to work with crappy software whereas the hardware is damn good...

for what Nokia cellphone, might I ask?

I have a Nokia N8 which requires no such software to add music. I do have all the music on the 8gb of extra storage and not the ~180mb of phone memory, though.
The N8 does have drag and drop functionality --> simply put the song in a folder with the same name. Optionally, you can drop those folders in another to create an album, while placing it one file-hierarchy level higher. (this works out great for making custom "best of" albums and putting incorrectly labeled music in its proper place.)

This manual method seems pretty arduous, but I do faintly remember having success with RhythmBox on Ubuntu 11.10, so using the Ovi Suite might not be completely necessary for those who want to be able to auto-sync...

Don't get me started on Sony... My second DAP was one of these-

It had a 30 gig hdd and was a pretty good deal at that time. The sound quality was rather decent but volume was extremely low as it was crippled by the EU regulations. Interestingly enough it even had an option to output pure line-out signal about which I was utterly clueless at the time. Menus were reasonably responsive so nowadays it might actually sell pretty well.

However the software was a fucking torture. You had to use a program that looked like some retarded and hideous stepchild of iTunes. The process of actually getting you music into the player was just idiotic. First of all you had to have that one folder that gets synchronized with your device. Then all of the music in that folder got converted to some obscure Sony exclusive format (by default @64kbps so you could get the same amount of songs as advertised). Once you found out that then you had to wait like an hour to reconvert everything to 192kbps. That is, if the damn thing didn't crash in the process. Oh yeah- every time you did connect your player to the PC it usually just resinchronized the whole lot just to be sure.

Some years back I had a Nokia 6233/6234 which initially required you to upload music via the OVI-software. The software looked like Foobar/VLC with less options. 128 kbps.

Later on (and I still have) the Nokia 6303 replaced it. The 6303 allowed me to drag and drop via the expandable memory card with tracks in 320 kbps. The software on the phone itself was sometimes problematic though so I later resorted to the Clip Plus.

Atrac - the Memory Stick Pro Duo Ono Super Double Extra of the music world. The most useless lossy format ever. Sony has never been able to write software. That's why I started buying Cowons in those days - unrestricted folder access (and FLAC support) FTW.

It's kinda funny that I managed to torment myself with the damn thing for about two years until the battery gave way. After that it served pretty well as a portable HDD (30gig in portable form was considered pretty impressive). Actually I spent quite time without music until I got myself a nice SE W880 music phone (I still consider it to be my favorite cell phone).

Recently in some Stockholm syndrome flashback I even checked if spare batteries are available for this beast. Turns out that there are some.

I recon that now my lust for a DAP can get reignited by the TF10 I'm getting. Most likely I'll just get a Leckerton and a GS3. The only DAP that has seriously got me salivating is the QA350. Must be some unresolved childhood issues manifesting in my masochistic DAP choices.

I love older Sony Walkmen, especially the minidisc variety. I still have my minidisc player from high school.

Was having a conversation in the shoutbox a week or two ago about music players circa high school or thereabouts, and it really rekindled some warm and fuzzies. MP3 players had just been released and were quite cutting edge. One of the major players in that arena at the time was Rio, and I had a little Rio player that was around 32 mb. Also MP3 CD players were fairly popular, and after being a bit disappointed by the huge, plastic-y effort from Rio, I ended up getting one by iRiver.

Then there was a precursor of sorts to the iPod, a large "jukebox" style player by Creative called the Nomad. It was about the size of two CD-players stacked on top of one another. Really gargantuan.

Back to the subject of Sony Walkmen, these days I use an A-Series (A865) and Z-Series (Z1070), both of which I'm really fond of. Before that I had an X-Series briefly, but ended up giving it to a friend. I'm thinking about picking up one of the new F-Series models that was just released too.
