I think a lot of people (including me) use DAPs in a more quiet work area, for example offices and such. so it's nice to have something portable but still good to carry around.

If I'm stationary I'd rather get out my Laptop and ODAC/O2 or something similar but I suppose everyone's needs are a little different...

yeah, I would too - but I'm not entirely stationary, I work on different machines most of the time. and I can't actually use a USB DAC, as I can't put any music on the computers at work. but it would indeed be better in terms of sound quality/value.

What version of the Fuze do you have?

If you know the production year and model you should be able to look it up on the Sandisk website. I'm eyeing the new Fuze because the Clip Plus was just too damn small for my hands and pockets and the new Fuze (V3 for that matter) is ergonomically more convenient for me.

Wait what? Where have you seen this?

I regularly check certain websites for certain audio products. The previous Fuze, the V2 was great with rockbox.

Speaking of DX100's, Anax, you should give them another listen with the newest firmware. iBasso's slowing coming around to making the firmware useable which would be great if it wasn't for the fact that they already released the fucking thing nearly a year ago. Surprisingly, they're also making advances with the sound quality, which is pretty sweet.

I have no problem using mine. Doesn't give me any problems. I'd prefer it if it didn't come with Android, however. Or at least the offered a version of the firmware where it just booted up to the music player with a snappier response time, foregoing Android. I know some users stream music with Wi-Fi via Android.

I just heard one a week ago, didn't blow my mind but didn't check if it was the latest FW, though it didn't 'ofeend' me either this time.  An ODAC still sounds better to me as a source.  The amp section is definitely nothing special.  I also don't buy the single unit argument either some make for the DX100.  It's a bigger unit than quite a few DAC/Amp bricks I've seen rubber banded together.

I don't care about usability, only sound.  I've built my own PCs since DOS.  There's nothing iBasso or Teclast can do to me that Microsoft hasn't already done.

I have the Hifiman HM801, 601, and Studio V, but only ever find myself using either my iPod Touch, the Touch with an HP-P1 (most commonly used), or Touch -> CLAS -> MK3-B (rarely used due to size and the HP-P1 being more than adequate for real portables). I should really get to selling the other DAPs.  It's not that they sound bad so much as they sound worse than iPod + thing and none of them have UIs nearly as nice.

My very tentative, very preliminary impression is that the iPad Mini may be the best-sounding iOS device ever.

well it does have two speakers.   ;)

I was considering one actually but the low rez screen put me off.  I'll get the retina ipad mini when its released next month.   :P

More importantly, if the tear down analysis I read is correct, instead of having the Cirrus combined DAC/amp chip from the iPhone 5 and the new Touch, it has separate DAC and class D amp chips (both from Cirrus).

I had (still have) the big iPad with the retina display. Trading screen resolution for thinness, lightness, and better audio was unquestionably the right call for me.

V3 = Fuze+?

Do you have the Fuze Plus? I'm eyeing the device but I read that is some ways (the controls) that it isn't a step up from the older Clip Plus and Fuze that came before.

Has anyone else found the Sansa Fuze's headphone out to sound better than the Line Out? Must be my imagination.
Despite the Fuze and Clip using the same chipsets, the Clip+ sounds better to my ears.

I got an Ipod Touch 2G a few years ago as a gift but the headphone jack crackles non-stop. So annoying. $50 to repair and I might do that.
I could do it but my eyes aren't good enough to solder a new jack to it.

Best sounding Ipod I have is the old Ipod Classic 3G. The one with the B&W screen and with only 16GB of space.
This is the one with the scroll wheel that doesn't click and with the 4 buttons above it.

I sure wish Ipods had memory card slots, but you know how Apple is sometimes..
