Fwiw, it's incredible how resolving a low-end stat like the SR-202 is with proper amping.  I tried some hi-res recordings and the detail retrieval was better than most dynamics I've heard.  It'd be interesting if that could be quantified in some way.

Thanks, the next true upgrade will be the basic Stax system...

If you don't want to break the bank, start with a 407.  Best bang-for-buck I've encountered in the Stax stable and it doesn't require crazy amping.  All the Stax and Sennheiser stats I've heard have incredible detail retrieval capabilities, so don't feel like you're listening to AM Radio if you start with a Lambda.  Aside from the Orpheus (which is just different), the difference in stats, to my ears, isn't really in detail, but in the kind of coloration you prefer.

My favourite headphone and silent reminder of how a good headphone should sound is the Pioneer Monitor 10. After that the K500 follows with my HD250 II for a more fun and speaker like sound.

A clean yet slightly emphasized midrange with smooth highs and present lows (subtle roll-off allowed below 30/40 hertz) and I am happy. What do you suggest is value for money and exactly in my alley?

Please don't recommend anything with a shady reputation à la DT48. The DT48 has strengths but I would not recommend it without knowing if you have something that allows you to change gain and volume settings with great accuracy. That Beyermutation annoyed me to extents you can't imagine...

Yeah, natural musical feel and presence versus delicate notes that emerge and vaporize instantaneously from the ether.

If the HD800 is Hagaan Dazs, the HE90/Jade modded is great Gelatto and most Stax are dippin' dots.

I don't think the low end stax are that detailed, but I haven't heard the new cheapies.

I'm not familiar with any of the headphones you mentioned, but I'd recommend looking for a 407 at a meet.  They hold their resale value pretty well if you end up not liking them and decide to sell.  It's a bit on the warm side.

x2. Have heard various lambdas, 407 and owned 507 and lambda sig. pro. They are much poorer at extraction of low level information than the Omega1/007/009.

009s are the best for detail extraction for me on the various amps I've heard it on.  I need to crank the volume on the 007 to get to similar levels of detail.

The 202/407/507, IMO, are still respectable with good amping, especially compared to the dynamics that are popular at standard meets.  The 202, I put through my system (407 and 507 was with inconsistent DACs so I'm not going to read into them too much), and CEE TEE and I were impressed with the detail it put out given the price range it punches in.  It's not an 007, but if we were looking at the headphone universe, I'd still put it in the above average category.  It's been over 6 months so I'll give it another listen if I run across another one.

A sound guy I know from high school in the past studies sound processing at the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam. He has a preference for the DT48 but he always told me: "give me a call and try out some Stax systems at the film academy." Given I am constantly in the neighbourhood I'll try my luck. He's quite lyrical about the Stax sound...
