The worst one was the Schiit HE400 that had really messed up vocals to my ears.  I do like how the HE400 resolves bass though.  I think it does this better than any current production phone for the price.

Any reason why the bad headphones tend to gravitate towards Schiit ? :D

Did they have either 1) a very shrill tizzy treble or 2) a very dark rolled-off treble? If either is true then they are either the recalled rev3 units, or recalled rev1 units, both of which have issues.

Granted the "good" (rev2) HE400s still have a slightly tizziness in the treble, but it's not that bad per-say, just the result of a broad peak centered at ~13kHz, as shown by the CSDs here.

Neither was the main problem for me.  The biggest issue was a distortion in the mids causing vocals to do a weird warble.

No idea about the recent Schiit phones but their non-bamboo LCD2v.2 is quite good.

I agree with anax regarding HE-400. I actually felt that the treble was one of the nicer things about them despite the slight tizziness. I am not too fond of the mids though.

I don't really mind the way the distortion plays with the mids on the HE-400.  Even with the distortion, their mids retain very good timbre and tonality, there was a glare around 1-2khz and some loss of definition in the mids that switching to velour pads helped a lot.  The only thing the distortion does for me is sorta blend their mids together a bit, causing for a little loss in blackness.  It makes something like HD650 snappy in comparison.

Yeah, I've decided I couldn't stand the HE-400 mids. I'm actually using the HE-500 in my bedroom rig now which I feel have nicer mids.

Not sure if the mids complaint the few posts prior are regarding the effects of THD, the colouration/voicing, or both.

It probably is a bit jarring when switching to HE400's coloured mids straight from a more neutral can, I kinda like it though. The effects of bad harmonic distortion continues to defy my non-golden ears.

Detail is usually high on headphones the flatter the frequency response is. The more even sounding the cans are, the more you can hear everything without other frequencies masking others. Now if the cans are even plus have a good transient response it becomes even better. Better meaning blacker background while being able to hear all the dynamic nuances in a recording. I believe good transient response and an ideal frequency response makes the headphone transparent since all the other measurements are usually good when a good FR and transient response is in check.

Fwiw, it's incredible how resolving a low-end stat like the SR-202 is with proper amping.  I tried some hi-res recordings and the detail retrieval was better than most dynamics I've heard.  It'd be interesting if that could be quantified in some way.
