So that's what the shimmer is. Go figure.

Can you throw up a -60db plot of the jades? How would it compare in regards to hash and such?

Would it be easy to do my YH3 at 60dB like this?  Would be interesting to compare since it's from the early 80's.

These -60dB noisefloor plots are very interesting! Could you measure and plot it for your HE400 (with velours)? I'm just curious as to how it compares to other cans.

It'd be interesting to see if there is some discrepancy between its noisefloor and atrocious THD.

Purrin's is less atrocious than normal, it has less mid distortion messing w/ the vocals than other HE400s I've heard.

Very curious; do you think it's because of manufacturing inconsistency or something entirely different?

I think so.  Can't imagine anything else since I heard two side by side w/ the same gear.

Well, I know that HFM pushed out three distinct revisions (two of which have issues) of HE400s, there's always the chance that purrin's unit is the good revision, and coincidentally you compared it against a "bad revision" unit.

The worst one was the Schiit HE400 that had really messed up vocals to my ears.  I do like how the HE400 resolves bass though.  I think it does this better than any current production phone for the price.

Did they have either 1) a very shrill tizzy treble or 2) a very dark rolled-off treble? If either is true then they are either the recalled rev3 units, or recalled rev1 units, both of which have issues.

Granted the "good" (rev2) HE400s still have a slightly tizziness in the treble, but it's not that bad per-say, just the result of a broad peak centered at ~13kHz, as shown by the CSDs here.
