Digital Media Management Recommendations?
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:54:47 PM »

So, recently I've been taking the time to upload some of my music to the cloud (Google Music). I'm beginning to appreciate having a nice interface to browse and listen to music.

Right now, I have all of my digital music (mp3s and FLACs) in folders, and I just drag and drop them into Foobar to play them. Technically it gets the job done, but playlist management sucks and I'd like to have a nicer interface so that guests can go through and play music without being so intimidated.

I know many people here have lots of digital audio files -- anyone have a recommendation for a media management program?

The two that I've stumbled upon so far are:

Media Monkey: http://www.mediamonkey.com/
JRiver Media Center: http://jriver.com/

Each go for $50, so cost isn't an issue.

I don't mind iTunes, but that doesn't play well with FLAC.

Anyone have any experience with these? Any other programs to recommend?

If you like hierarchical file structure management (eg, you're good about keeping your folders structured the way you want to browse them), use Foobar's built-in Media Library.  It indexes your entire library by file structure in real-time.  I never need to drag and drop, and use Foobar to browse my music library.

If you prefer ID3 tag management, Foobar is powerful if you don't mind playing around with layouts and add-ons.  Otherwise, JRiver is a one size fits all solution.

I'm a little old skool in that I consider file management to be a necessary first step and the choice of interface as a secondary consideration.

Tag & Renamehttp://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm: A batch processor of music files that I use to maintain file names, id3 (& etc.) tags, and folder hierarchy. This sounds similar to what you've already done for your respective compressed and uncompressed collections and T&R might be a useful tool if you're dealing with tens of thousands of songs beyond the Google Music upload limit.

Another throwback software choice I recommend is Winamp. The database functions are fairly bare on the interface, not slick or glitzy but useful and to the point. The app allows you a decent amount of freedom, if not the open source customization utopia like fubar. It's cheap and even the free version includes all the functionality you could desire, save for ripping abilities (where EAC reigns supreme anyway). It might be a little intimidating at first glance to guests, but it comprises simple components and isn't any tougher to master than a basic word processor.

Thanks for the recs, guys.

I am a bit OCD about my file management, so everything is already broken into a neat folder structure. The ID tags aren't all there yet though so the Tag & Rename app will come in handy.

After reading more into the JRiver, I might end up going with that unless someone has any overly negative experiences with it.

Foobar will accomplish everything you're asking for.  I can send you the theme I've made for myself and a list of additional add-ons I'm using if you'd like.  Just send me your email address.

JRiver is much more plug-and-play but I like my Foobar interface a lot more since I'm also very particular about my folder structure.  I also prefer the SQ from Foobar over JRiver and JPlay.

I don't use any visual enhancements so it won't look too fancy, but there are lots of FB skins out there that look way better than JRiver :)

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/Ely13/fbexample1.jpg

Here are some explanations of what's going on here:
(1) The top-left field with the genres and artists are an exact replication of what's on my HDDs.  For example, the album that's open could be on:
C:\Music\Pop\Sarah McLachlan\1993 Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

Lower down, one of the Cranes albums could be in:
E:\Music\Shoegaze\Cranes\1991 Wings of Joy

I use File -> Preferences -> Media Library -> Add (button), then set it to monitor C:\Music and E:\Music at all times.  Foobar automatically builds an index (goes extremely quickly) of everything and updates it in real-time.  If I use Windows Explorer and add another album to \Sarah McLachlan, Foobar updates without any prompting and does it within seconds.  You can also use that Filter box for real-time search, or click on that 'View' box to load and sort your index by ID3 tags if you like iTunes-esque filtering.

(2) I setup a priority structure for the cover art at the bottom-left.  FB automatically looks for cover.jpg as priority one, followed by album.jpg, then looks for .jpgs, then .pngs, then .bmps, etc., in the base directory first.

(3) Notice at the top middle that a tab called 'Library Viewer Selection' is highlighted.  If I left-click once on an album in my media library, such as '1993 Fumbling Towards Ecstasy', that Library Viewer Selection tab automatically populates with all the media files.  Foobar also has very robust cuelist support, so it will load a proper .cue as a clean list of songs as shown in the middle field.

(4) You can see the lyrics on the right-hand side with the blue highlighting the active part of the song.  I use the Lyrics Show Panel 3 add-on to automatically pull lyrics from about a dozen online song dbs, and if there's lyric timing, it automatically syncs to the right part of the song.

There are a lot of other things under the hood which visually aren't displayed on the screen.  For example, my Foobar has full DTS and DTS+HD decoders, DVD-A decoder, APE/TTA, multichannel to 2.0ch downmix, and pretty much every other file extension you'd need, SACD, etc., all enabled.  I've tried virtually every major and minor audio player for PC and Mac, and nothing touches Foobar in support for pretty much every possible digital audio format out there (including DVDs and specialty hi-res formats), and only takes seconds to to extract and drop in /components.  Pretty much everything you see here is customizable.  Like, I could add another field that automatically loads the spectrum of every song (so if you load a 5.0 song, you'll see 5 spectrums stacked above each other) with a tracking cursor.

For playlist junkies, there are a lot of very deep playlist options to track, assign stars/ratings, manage the statistical algorithms, etc., for managing your library.

Unless you particularly like the sound of JRiver, it's not only a waste of money but a pain in the butt to deal with since there's very little UI customization available the last time I used it, and Foobar has enormous add-on development and support through Hydrogenaudio.org.  There are tons of Foobar skin sites on the net, and here are some examples to see what some people do (just be careful about downloading old skins, as Foobar went through a huge revision in 1.0, and there's very little reason to use Columns UI now):

Mine is Foobar using Columns UI. Simple and effective. Without columns UI, looking for artists starting with an "S" in the Artist name is not as easy as pressing the letter "S" like you can when using columns UI  :)p5

Actually, with the new folder structure and view options in Foobar 1.0, you can view 'by artist' and it's as easy as pressing the letter "S" :)  I just did it right now.

Columns is not necessary anymore except for some specialized layout tweaking with the fields and depreciated add-ons iirc.

I tried it now and all it does is it goes to the next song starting with the letter "S" on the title. It doesn't go to the next Artist starting with "S"
