Look at the link I posted in my long explanation.  There's a drop-down menu under the word 'View' on the middle left-hand side of the screen.  Change it from 'by folder structure' to 'by artist'.  This is all within the base Foobar UI.

To get that field into your UI, go to View -> Layout -> Enable layout editing mode.  Right-click the field you want as your media library -> Replace UI element -> Media Library Viewers -> Album List.  Make sure you have that field selected as the active field by left-clicking anywhere in the media library field.

This is all I'm getting when following those steps. What I want is the view to still look like the playlist view where I can use the navigation buttons as well as quick searching the artist by letter at the same time without having to go to the search box. I wonder if this is what you meant or if I just did something totally wrong  :)p14

You're halfway there :)  You now need to add additional fields to your layout.  That's why I have 6 fields in mine (media library, playlist, file info, lyrics, album image, and spectrum).

(1) You need to add another field to the right (or wherever you'd like) to your media library.  In my picture, you'll see my playlist to the right of my media library (under Replace UI Element -> Playlist Renderers -> Playlist View).  To add another field, you need to do Replace UI Element -> Containers -> Splitter (left/right) or Splitter (top/bottom).  Make sure you have tabs at the top of your playlist!

(2) Under File -> Preferences, go to Media Library and make sure Library viewer selection playlist has both 'Enabled' and 'Activate when changed' selected.

I used to be a diehard columns user, but I ditched it and went to the stock Foobar UI, along with a really large proportion of folks on Hydrogenaudio, when 1.0 came around.  Columns was a bit of a beast to work with.  Once you spend 5-10 minutes getting accustomed to the new layout editor, it's far easier to work with than the old way and instantly integrates with all new add-ons.

gurubhai, that looks nice!

This thread is awesome. Thanks Elysian for opening my eyes to more options. I'm feeling too dumb at the moment to go for full customization mode but I will definitely get back to this later.

Yeah, it's a little tricky the first time you're getting into the system, but once you've figured it out, you can do all sorts of cool things to tweak your UI to have all sorts of features, like gurubhai's layout (in addition to stuff like pulling Wikipedia artist page, etc.).

Feel free to PM me your email address if you'd like me to just email you my theme and some basic instructions.  All my UI stuff is stock Foobar UI so there's nothing unusual there.  You're actually pretty close to being done.

Thanks!
I finally managed to slip the 'Facets' into something that looks decent.

Its very powerful, user friendly & fast. You can customize it to browse through any tags that you labelled on your music files & you can have multiple 'facet' instances having different browsing schemes through tabs.
Its the reason that I have stuck to DUI for past few years.

Elysian -- Awesome! That's more or less what I was looking for. If I can "dress it up" with some skins, that would be perfect. And save me a bit of money in the process.

Does Foobar have a function to auto-grab the cover art and song lyrics, or do you manually embed them into the tags?

Yup, you can do all the layout editing you want :)  Foobar used to be tough to work with due to Columns (and having to code in specific pixel width), but now it's very easy with a drag-based UI in the base application.  You can grab someone else's skin you like and edit away.

Yes, you can configure Foobar to do both of your requests:
(1) Cover art: I like having high-res cover art so I manually search for images off of Google Images, save the file as cover.jpg, then place it in my album directory and have Foobar prioritize pulling cover.jpg in the active directory.  I'm pretty sure I've also seen an add-on/option that can just pull album covers from online sources on-demand.

(2) Lyrics: You can do both.  The base setting for the add-on below is to create a separate lyrics DB that saves all the lyrics (automatically downloaded when you play a song).  I personally have that disabled and have my Foobar query about a dozen lyrics servers on-demand.  I'm sure there's also an ID3v2 embedding option, too.
