Yeah, and not to use Todd's Meridian as a source when voicing his (Pete's) amps as of late...

That meridian 808 or Go8 or whatever the heck it is, after having heard it a few times now, i am convinced it sucks balls.

Not really suggesting a two amp solution, just comparing the relative values of the stat amp market.

As far as "flatness", what I was referring to was the dynamics (and more specifically micro-dynamics) rather than soundstage. In this respect, I find the BHSE to be a flatter sounding than the LL. But the BHSE provides more driver control, precision, and bass extension.
Ah, I was interpreting flatness as the depth of the image.  Without a separate preamp, the BB and LL are the best among the several stat amps I've heard, but I haven't heard the Electra or WES yet.

If someone in the Bay Area picks up a LL, it'd be interesting to do an extended shootout between the two amps in a comfortable listening environment.

Re Craig's cautiousness about a TOTL-priced stat amp, I'm still unsure whether there's enough demand given the several rounds of BHSEs and LLs.  I agree that it'll have to do something very different from both amps to win new converts, and convince those with enough disposable income to either double-up on TOTL amps or sell their BHSE/WES/LLs.  At this level of performance, different is more relevant than better, IMO, and Moth-grade cosmetics are a must.

With the LL, Alex has an ace card that many potential owners would prefer and no current commercial headamp stat amp can match - solid state.

Excepting Stax, of course  ;)
For the price of the LL you can pick up both a 323 and a 727.

That's why I said "Headamp" stat amp - as in Justin has no SS option on the market right now and the BHSE has tubes, which some are averse to.  In the near future, users who want "the best" are going to size up the perceived TOTL options - Headamp, EC, and Cavalli (let's leave Woo and RSA out of the discussion.)  The basic criteria in most people's minds (with differing percentages on what's important to them) is design (what puts the "magic" in "magic amp box thingee"), aesthetics, functionality, or price.  (Perception too, I guess.  But that's largely just the game of hype.)

LL has an automatic "plus" in aesthetics in that it's SS, for those needing WAF or with pets and kids around.  This is also a plus in functionality as it's easier to transport, less setup and hassle of tubes, etc.

My point was that Craig will need to be either killer on price or design to sway the BHSE crowd.  His aesthetics and functionality will also have to be at least par for the course.

As to value- people will still be willing to shell out.  Just like aftermarket cables can command much higher sums even if the stock HD800 cable is already awesome, people will be willing to pay much more for the "aftermarket" amps than the Stax amps (excluding the mythical T2.)

No way will Pete Millet ever sell direct. He designs the stuff for fun, the side income is just a bonus.

edit: he also doesn't voice his amps with Meridian sources. That's what Todd uses. I think I asked him what his source was at a meet, but ahem the drinks we were having seemed to have memory loss as a consequence  :)p5

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant "headamp" in the vernacular.

:)p2 First of all...many thanks to Purrin for letting me visit his house once more for some indulgence in music and hi-fi. :)p6

To make a long story short...there are few tube amps I recommend and the ones that get my highest recommendations are always those by Eddie Current and Frank Cooter.  :)p7

Hearing the Electra today along with some Jades, I once again understand why I hold Craig from Eddie Current in such high esteem. The man can seriously make a fantastic tube amp.  :)p16

The Electra is pure WIN.  :)p1

Thanks for mentioning how it pairs with the Jade.

Does this latest version of the Electra have a normal bias output?

Yup. One jack will be normal bias, the other pro bias. I hope to be getting some STAX HP1000s, also known as SR-Xs.

Eddie Current Electra Fancy Schmancy Version
« Reply #29 on: July 14, 2012, 04:41:55 PM »

OK, here's a little secret. DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING!

The art guy who used to work with Craig on Moth supposedly did a super awesome Moth-esq design for the Electra. (I have not seen the design yet.) Craig's not going to use it because it will increase costs. The art guy gets a piece of the action for every unit sold, and as this amp is already a collaboration between Andy Hefley (of Ampzilla) and Craig. What I'm trying to do is convince Craig to offer two versions: 1) standard; and 2) fancy for $1000 more or something like that.

So keep your eyes open and your mouths shut. You know what we do to pirates who squeal...
