The Kenwood KH-K1000 is something of a forgotten headphone, but closed and fairly well behaved. It may very well be an Audio-Technica rebrand.

In my humble opinion, one of the best fully isolating headphones out there right now is the Ultrasone Signature Pro. Yeah, I know we're not allowed to say good things about Ultrasones, but they've actually managed to create a fairly well balanced flagship without their infamous sibilant, glaring treble. Maybe they got a new team in house now? Maybe they switched with Sennheiser and the team that was SUPPOSED to work on the HD700 ended up there instead, and visa versa.

In terms of on-ear designs, the Focal Spirit One isn't too bad. I prefer it to the circumaural K550 that's for sure.

I should get to hear the Sig Pro on Saturday.  I'd be surprised if it's left the messy ringing behind but I intend to give them a fair shot.

The KH 1000 is also something I'd like to try as well but it's not very common here in the US.  Is there anything more common you'd compare it to?

I have the KH-K1000. To my ears they sound a lot like a big DT1350. Similar moderate deep bass with recessed mid-bass (you hear the kick drum, but not the bass guitar). The treble isn't the most refined that I've heard, but its benign and errs on the side of sweetness. Never harsh or spitty like the Denons. The KH-K1000 is not very resolving at low to moderate volume. If you listen <75dB, they really aren't worth it. Above that they do reasonably well. Isolation is pretty good, and they are very comfortable.

How's the isolation on the JVC DX1000?

Thanks for that info on the KH-K1000.

I usually like to listen just loud enough to out compete the background noise even if it's already quiet so it might not be the best choice.

Yeah I'd recommend against in that case. Unless you listen fairly loud, the headstage collapses and becomes paper flat, and the mids go MIA.

Newsflash!

The Bose QC15 don't suck!

I figured I was mostly just going to use them for podcasts and times when I would have to constantly pop my IEMs in and out of my ears because people wouldn't shut up when I was trying to be antisocial (:D) and to use over my IEMs since they're way more comfy than hard clamping industrial hearing protectors I sometimes use to crank the isolation up to 11.  It turns out they're not to bad at all.

The bass is little loose in a slightly funky way, purrin would probably find them lacking in "plankton" or whatever and RD might not get a long with the few slightly rough spots in the treble but the midrange is smooth and pleasant though lacking a bit of detail and angled drivers give them some nice forward projection too.  Of course the ANC is awesome too.  They blow away all the others best buy had on display, the Beats studio, the Soul, and their Rocketfish house brand which pwned the celebrity endorsed crap for cheaper.

I haven't had a ton of time with them yet but if the split system A/C ends up to be too expensive I could end up using these as movie and gaming cans...

A neighbor gave me a pair of QC15 after 9 months of solid heavy construction.  They're ok.  They didn't offend me, but I didn't want to listen to them either.  I found the M50 to be much better.  I also can't handle the ANC, makes me feel dizzy.  I'm going to put them on craigslist.

I don't get the nausea.  I guess I'm lucky.

Haven't heard the M50s in a while so I couldn't do much of a direct comparison but I'd mostly agree with the M50s being better.  I remember the M50's soundstage being more congested and claustrophobic than the QC15's though.

The QC15 are way more comfy and have way more isolation.  With the deal I got I think they'd be worth it just to piggyback over my PFE232s for more isolation no matter how they sounded though.

They aren't great for music but I find them much less offensive than most headphones.

I use a Denon NC800 for flights and other loud environments. Really not that bad a headphone, I'd be curious how close it measures to the very similar looking AH-D1001. I actually prefer it to the D2000 - the treble is recessed rather than grating, and I feel like the mids are more present. When flying I wear Alpine FlyFit earplugs with the Denons on top, which gets rid of maybe 80% of the jet noise, and completely wipes out the annoying high pitched whines I've sometimes heard on flights. Makes things SOOO much more pleasant. Unless there's a baby directly in front or behind me, I can't hear them either.

Probably not worth the $350 list price, but I picked them up from Electronics Expo "open box" for $180, which was a great deal.
