  • First you get a swimming pool full of liquor...

The Kenwood KH-K1000 is something of a forgotten headphone, but closed and fairly well behaved. It may very well be an Audio-Technica rebrand.

In my humble opinion, one of the best fully isolating headphones out there right now is the Ultrasone Signature Pro. Yeah, I know we're not allowed to say good things about Ultrasones, but they've actually managed to create a fairly well balanced flagship without their infamous sibilant, glaring treble. Maybe they got a new team in house now? Maybe they switched with Sennheiser and the team that was SUPPOSED to work on the HD700 ended up there instead, and visa versa.

In terms of on-ear designs, the Focal Spirit One isn't too bad. I prefer it to the circumaural K550 that's for sure.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Erm, having lived with quite a few Beyers, and owning two pairs of Magnepan speakers, I'd say if there's a headphone reminiscent of those speakers it's the Fostex T50RP (certainly more so than the HE or Audeze lines IMHO), and the Beyers, much as I like them, are nothing like it. I know you are referring about 50 Hertz specifically, but the characteristics of a planar are different.

Tonalitywise they are very similar IMO. I haven't heard the fostex but among the almost 100 headphones I've owned the 250 ohm dt250 is the one that sounds most like mmgs that I've ever heard. Grainwise yes they are different. Theres something a little smoothed out about planars that are not happening on standard dynamic cans.

I should get to hear the Sig Pro on Saturday.  I'd be surprised if it's left the messy ringing behind but I intend to give them a fair shot.

The KH 1000 is also something I'd like to try as well but it's not very common here in the US.  Is there anything more common you'd compare it to?

I got a pair of PX200 from Tyll and have been pretty impressed with this little gem, it does press on the lobes after a while so not recommended for extended listening.

I will bring a bunch of things along for you to play with on Saturday.

The px200 sucks ass. Bass lite and it has a nasal cuppy coloration to it typical of el cheapo cans. Sorry I'm not the Don you were asking but my name is also Don LOL. I just wanted to give my own opinion about them since I've owned both versions.

Well from memory they didn't hurt my ears.  That's more than most phones can say.

They're dynamic, what more can I say. Except they are not bad for what they are. I find most dynamics a little coloured so it is hard to say how coloured they are relative to other dynamics. Overall I do not find them to be offensive and they do have deep bass. Not as articulate as the LCD's but then they are the size of a pea in comparison. I would not define them ass, sound is a little dependant on fit however. I will bring them along and MR can hear them for himself :) ..dB
