Hello pirates: I'm a long time lurker, first time poster blah blah blah. I'm basically the twenty-something M50 toting head-fier who thinks his opinion is just as valuable as yours because "we all hear the same sounds". Or at least I was until this forum served me up a bakery's worth of humble pie and a reality check that Donald Trump couldn't cash. Since then I have come to appreciate the wealth of experience which many members of this forum possess and seem more than willing to share. But enough navel-gazing! Thanks for all the help, and I look forward to many more hours of head-scratching confusion and soul-crushing sticker shock aboard the S.S. Changstar. I can always count on you guys to send me reaching for the dictionary or running down to the library.

BTW how legal is ripping library CDs? Or is that a question for another (part of the) forum?

Welcome Zephyrre!

That question sounds like a good one for the general discussion or music forum.

Dunno about the legality of ripping library CDs... If you know something (or want to run down the library), start a new tread let us know Zeph.

Edit: Welcome! :)p4

Hey all,

I've made several posts here, so some of you may know me already, but I suppose an "official" introduction is in order.

I'm a high school math teacher, cross country coach, and overall tech geek.  My spiral down the rabbit hole started off with my Grado SR80i purchase which felt like a completely ludicrous extravagance at the time since $20 headphones sounded "perfectly" fine.  Everything's gone downhill from there...financially, I mean.  I'm currently solidly stuck in mid-fi land with the DT880 (250 ohm) and DT1350s for portable use.

Love these forums since there's nowhere in town to try gear.  I depend solely on word of mouth so thanks for all the input and ideas you guys put out there.

See you around, I'm sure...

Welcome  :)p4

When the library does not specifically forbid ripping CDs, either spoken or in writing you can rip the CDs for personal use. You are a member of their library. They share their collection, you enjoy their collection. Has there been a court case about this issue?

That's what I thought. The RIAA website states that it is legal to make a copy for personal use of a CD which you own. The CDs in the library were bought with taxpayer money (those that were not donated) so one could argue that they are publicly owned. I have been unable to find any record of this issue going to court though. Also of note, it seems that many librarians adamantly believe copying library CDs is illegal. In light of that, I do not feel that asking  my local librarian would yield the most favourable response (by favourable I mean "Yes it is legal.")

P.S. Thanks for the warm welcome!

P.P.S. Who knew there were so many SACDs in the library?
