Hi everyone, sorry to be posting this late. My bad. Really good to be here. Changstar is the shit.

Besides the headphone obsession, I’ve also got it for pro-audio and electric bass.

The speaker obsession has been quelled since I’ve put together a 4.4 NHT Xd system. It’s a little over the top with the 4 subs totaling 8 10” woofers. All together there are 16 drivers and 2600 watts. The included power amps have DEQX-based DSP crossovers inside. 28Hz - 30 kHz +/- 1 dB. Surprisingly the subs don’t over-run the room at all if set conservatively.

I thought I was done with headphones too, until I heard the ESP950. They make me want to liquidate all of my dynamics now.  First up, I’ll be going for the Electra to pair with the Koss. Then maybe the 007 MkI and hopefully the resurrected Jade.

Music tastes are primarily Baroque, especially Bach and Vivaldi. Hearing the cantatas and operas are pure bliss on the ESP950.

I also love Jazz, mostly from the 50’s and 60’s. Also like rock, folk etc.

Many thanks to Marv, Analixus and other supporting staff and members here that make this place great!  :)p1

Staying in this crazy hobby long enough is a sure way to end up Baroque.

Time to say hello.  Long (long) time audiophile.  I'm a theater director, who's done a lot of his own sound design over the years.  I've been interested in headphones at home for quite a while, but the first attempt proved unfortunate when my wife gave me some HD800s in their first year, and--through a Denon receiver--I just didn't like them.  They sounded "electronic," more or less pinched and artificial, not a lot like music.  Tried again this last Christmas with a gift for my seventeen-year old son of an Asgard and some AKG 550s, as well buying some Beyer dt 1350s for myself.  This time the results were much better.  I suppose I got lucky.  The 1350s are good: a little closed in and clearly lacking detail and air; but pretty much enjoyable--especially with a portable.  The 550s seem to be very good: thin through the upper mids and a little splashy up high; but voices are terrific, and bass is articulate.  I guess my son got one of the good ones.  So, I end up agreeing with Tyll about these.

I'm over here because of a misadventure with the Beyer T1.  Flushed with moderate success on the Christmas purchases, I went looking for high end phones; and was directed both through reviews, and contact with HF members, to the Beyer.  When the pair came, they sounded awful: but not, I think, with the problems most hear.  This pair was muffled, closed in, and wasn't opening up with break in.  So, they went back.

And when I emailed an amp manufacturer to ask questions about them, he sent me over here.  And the few days I've been on have certainly been an education: certainly about sample to sample deviations with Beyers.  And I expect to keep on reading and learning.  What I can contribute are whatever lessons decades of audiophile and professional listening, and some recording, experience might be transportable.

So, hello.  And I certainly look forward to the experience.

Welcome jrb!

Do you still have the HD800? There are many here who can guide you to getting the most from them.

olor1n,

No, sent them back in horror at what they cost.  Do I wish I had them now?  Yep.  I'm not sure they'd be right for me, but I have a much better sense of their amplification needs--and the mods that might be useful.  Sort of stuck at the moment at where to go from here: most interested in the HiFi Man 5Le (if still available) and 500; or the Paradox/Fostex.  I really just need to hear some more phones at their best.

I'm tempted to purchase an amp like the EC Super 7 first for the phones I have (the AKG Q701 and Beyer dt 1340); and then looking for the upscale phones.

Hello all.  I've been lurking for about two months and finally decided to register.  The name is Luis, but since you already have one of those, shadow is fine :)
