Done.

The mods consist of:
  • The new pads: Brainwavz HM5 pleathers, sealed to baffle with 3M 468MP double-sided adhesive (this stuff. very nice for mods)
  • New frontwave damping:
    • Creatology foam around driver opening on baffle plate
    • ~3mm thick open cell foam disc on top of that
  • New backwave damping:
    • Creatology foam on inside earcup
    • High density open cell foam crammed in the driver's vents
    • High density open cell foam ring around the driver (compresses against the baffle when assembled)
  • Headphone has been converted from single-sided cable entry to dual-sided:
    • Harvested a headband sleeve and cable inlet from a broken Monitor 10-II
    • Cut a hole in the right earcup to mount the inlet
    • Removed the cabled headband sleeve and strain reliefs on top of cups
    • Removed stock decayed leather on outer earcups
    • Restrung earcups with new (nicer) faux leather
    • Replaced the cabled headband sleeve with the bare one from the spare 10-II
    • Replaced stock cable with a Monoprice 6' TRS to RCA

About the pads: Holy fucking soft. These are incredibly comfy. They seal well enough with glasses to be usable, too. Overall the sound has less bass slam than I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting these to be so soft. They act as a sponge.

About the sound: Pretty sure I'm holding the TH900 killer. Bass is just as powerful as the TH600 I used to own. Bass quality is much tighter and more textured. Soundstage is enormous. Midrange is clear and clean. FR is smooth and relatively neutral with a slight dip at 4-5kHz and what appears to be a gentle "V" signature.

I wonder if they work on the HD650's? I emailed them, but they haven't gotten back to me yet, probably because of the Holiday

I was looking at this the other day. The dimensions are correct, and they fit up fine, but one would need to remove the plastic ring that locks the HD6xx pad to the headphone (from an existing set of stock pads) and then glue them on to the HM5 pads. The plastic ring seals the pad around the driver; bass response would probably be severely degraded if the pad wasn't sealed. I plan to try the HM5 pads once I order a set of new HD6xx pads - I'll remove the plastic locking rings from the old worn out set and glue them on to the HM5 pads. I'm not expecting them to be better than the Senn stock pads sonically, but I like tinkering with stuff just for fun.

You can make the velour HM5 pads fit, but it's a big PITA trying to get the stock ones off the plastic mounting ring and get the HM5 pads on instead.

Thanks hans, not sure if I want to risk damaging the hd650's, but those pads do look nice.

where

the 10-II is too TH900-y for me at the moment so I want to try velours but angled pads make these sound like the HD800 in soundstage
