LCD-3, no soundpressure?
« on: February 27, 2014, 04:03:13 AM »

So i recently got my hands on a pair of LCD-3's and I'm enjoying them a lot more than expected from my past experiences with Audezes, however the lower mids and bass section seems to have barely any force behind it... I lot of music ends up sounding boring on it as a result. I got it to complement my HD800 which at times lacks some power in the bass for electronic music, but now I'm finding that the LCD-3 almost has a less powerful bass than the HD800 - On some headphones like fx. TH900 or V-Moda M100 you can literally feel the bass, the vibrations in the air pressure etc. which adds an amazingly engaging element and feeling of realism to the sound, and the Audeze just seems to have none of this. It simply portrays the information, telling you that there is bass, but there is no actual weight or feeling behind it... This seems very odd to me from what I've heard ofthem previously...

Anyone got any idea what might be going on?

Same thing I've noticed any time I try an LCD.

Yes noticed the same thing. The Audezes can render a certain sustained power down low, but they don't punch or slam like the HD800s on a proper amp. In general, that's an issue with orthos / planars. It's why I prefer traditional dynamic drivers on speakers.

I havn't come across any open headphone that really gives you a hugely tactile bass.  Closed headphones have a distinct advantage there because they can pressurize the enclosed cavity better.

I don't really consider 'feeling' the bass all that realistic anyways, unless your only priority is reproducing the visceral experience of thousands of watts on a PA system at a rock concert.

Well damn... That just voided the whole reason for me getting the LCD-3 in the first place... I mean its been fun having it since it ended up sounding way better balanced/neutral (talking stand alone impression here, not compared to other headhones) than I remembered. But since what it ends up doing is just another version of what I already have in the HD800 that renders it a tad pointless to me unless i can find a headphone that does have that "visceral speaker system" effect, that I can fit in my budget whilst keeping it, which I doubt... DANG IT! facepalm

The journey for the perfect duo of headphones continue I guess...

The TH900 almost did what i wanted, but its treble was just waaaay to fatigueing to plausibly use without fear of damaging my hearing.

Do any of you have ideas for the best headphones to replicate that large amount of actual low frequency sound pressure I'm looking for? Any thoughts or recommendations would be much appreciated..

Just saw some of the same things being discussed in the AKG K812 thread... Might even be worth making a seperate thread on the topic if something substantial turns up...  popcorn

Properly amped HD800, IMO. What are you using with your 800s?

I use an ALO Rx Mk3b (I prefer to invest my money in portable gear so I can enjoy it as much of the time as possible(yes I will use these headphones portably, I am that nuts sometimes)), currently single ended though due to a lack of a Kobiconn plug to make a balanced cable for it, where as the Audeze is running balanced.
It drive both nicely, so far the only amp I have heard that maybe sounded marginally better was a fully decked out Beta22. Woo amps etc. seem to completely ruin the HD800 to my ears (removes most of the impact, treble crispness etc.).
As a result I do think the HD800 is perfect 90% of the time, but sometimes I just want that extra grunt - realistic/natural or not :)

Yeah, you haven't heard HD800s at their potential. B22 is pretty terribad, in many of the ways you described the Woo amps, with the HD800s.

Indeed, thats why I've stuck with the Rx Mk3b: because I haven't heard any amp so far which I found to really outperform it - not any i had the chance to compare with anyway. Again a problem with living where I do is the tax here makes it so high end gear is a rare thing, and high end headphone gear is even rarer... Unless ofcourse you make a blind purchase like I do most of the time (relatively anyway).
But which amp would you recommend? And which improvements would it potentially yield over the Mk3?
