I think LCD-2's impact is fine. And LCD-3 is just muddy mid-rangy thing. I only heard one LCD-3 however, may be there are better versions.
Muddy and midrangy are probably the last things I'd use to describe the LCD-3 with - sounds like you got a veiled one like i did when they first came out. The LCD-2 is very muddy though, or rather it lack a LOT of detail when compared to other high end headphones (sounds fine on it own though).

It depends upon the individual units though. You should hear Craig's LCD2.2. At the 2013 Bay Area meet, when Questhate heard his own LCD2 and compared to it to Craig's, he was like WTF? Questhate then got his unit RMA'd. His new LCD2.2 sounds much better.

Vali
Are we talking about the 119$ Vali amp from Schiit? Because that sounds highly unlikely... :o

Definitely make sure to avoid any and all small price tags. It's a sure sign of bad quality.

Well no, but I just dont see how it could be better, its got the same amount of power, and its single-ended where as the RX Mk3b is balanced - in general, on paper, i just don't see what would be better about it... And not that I think something being cheap is bad, but I think anyone would be a bit suspicious at first if being told that something that cost six times less than what they have, significantly outdoes it, in almost any context...
Especially since my only experience with Schiit audio was listening to a T1 (which I do quite like normally) on a schiit valhalla, which sounded absolutely horrendous and harsh for some reason - may just be that those two dont do well together ofcourse...
And I haven't heard any descriptions of the Vali with fx. the HD800. Would be interesting though...

Thats a bit worrying, but considering this LCD-3 sounds completely different from the last one i had according to my notes, thats not unexpected. The last LCD-3 I owned I described as being VERY dark, and remember it having very nice bass, where as the one I own currently is not at all dark, it just sounds like a more ear-friendly HD800 almost, with a smaller soundstage (generalizing here but you get the point)... I mean at times it almost sounds bright!
