Arguably the first full metal (video)
« on: January 11, 2014, 08:40:58 AM »

Relatively new video release from May 1968 in color... arguably the first full 100% metal - two Marshalls, 16 speakers, and nothing diluting the attention to the guitar and its electric tone:

(the recording from Bologna two weeks later goes further to "heavy metal" - the pace slowed down to allow the guitar to ring out)

Earlier, you had the metal mixed evenly with prog , psychedelic and rock'n'roll:

(although you can certainly make a case for most people being first introduced to "metal showmanship" right there)

There was no footage on Dick Dale & His Del-Tones? Dick Dale was notorious for always wanting more powerful amplifiers and speakers.

That Hendrix just literally made my spine tingle. He just oozes musicality from every pore and does it with complete effortlessness.

He's got too much soul for me to make that metal connection though. I always thought of Helter Skelter as a one of the first rudimentary metal songs.

I find Hendrix still more Blues and Rock & Roll.

Agreed, "Helter Skelter" is more Metal for its sound.

From the same 1967-68 period. God, those were good years for music. I wish I was older at the time to appreciate what was coming out.

hello,

well, i am that old. Cream in Oakland (the Colosseum?) and one year later Blind Faith at the same venue.

then, about a year after that, Van the Man in Berserkly touring in support of this:

the encore was Van blowin' a bari with his band at full tilt!

not metal, but he f*ckin' ROCKED!

I find Hendrix still more Blues and Rock & Roll.
There were different phases at different times (and, of course, different styles for different songs).

In early 1968, he starts to get more metal.  At some point, he starts using two full stacks of Marshalls.  By mid-May 1968, as we see in the new video in the OP, IMHO he has reached a point where it is fully metal, rather than just hard rock with feedback.

Then, he goes on a tour in Europe, and by the end of May in Italy, we find this "heavy metal" concert (audio only)

By the time he plays Winterland in mid-October 1968, he is back to a more balanced prog-rock style (perhaps anticipating the release of Electric Ladyland at the end of that month).

I didn't realize metal was defined by the number of speakers...

Think of speakers in measures of loudness. There is something to be said in favour of that analogy...

I didn't realize metal was defined by the number of speakers...
It's not a factor these days, but in the 60s it was.   The demands of the Beatles live concerts caused a change in sound equipment.

Of course in the studio, one has never needed more than one amp and one speaker (and one can even go direct with the right processing equipment).
