I find Hendrix still more Blues and Rock & Roll.
There were different phases at different times (and, of course, different styles for different songs).

In early 1968, he starts to get more metal.  At some point, he starts using two full stacks of Marshalls.  By mid-May 1968, as we see in the new video in the OP, IMHO he has reached a point where it is fully metal, rather than just hard rock with feedback.

Then, he goes on a tour in Europe, and by the end of May in Italy, we find this "heavy metal" concert (audio only)

By the time he plays Winterland in mid-October 1968, he is back to a more balanced prog-rock style (perhaps anticipating the release of Electric Ladyland at the end of that month).

I'm not sure I would put that performance under nascent "heavy metal". All I can hear are lots of amplified blues riffs.

I think before you can label something you first have to define what you mean (i.e. "heavy metal"). Then someone else can come along and either agree or disagree with your criteria and then say whether your criteria meets with the examples you give. Otherwise we are playing pin the tail on the musical donkey.

If there were criteria, then it would be a book instead of music.

BTW, in the show in Italy (Palasport in Bologna), the first song is mostly a warmup.

The audio was created by a Dutch fan, who mixed together three different audience recordings:

1st Source very lightly in the middle.
2nd Source on the left.
3rd source slightly off centre on the right.

So you're not even going to try and explain what you mean?

You say "In early 1968, he starts to get more metal." then "By mid-May 1968, as we see in the new video in the OP, IMHO he has reached a point where it is fully metal, rather than just hard rock with feedback."

How? Why?

If you're going to have an opinion, at least share how you arrived at it. Unless you didn't know what you meant yourself?

I agree with Numbersixx, I don't hear anything particularly metal about those Jimi clips beside the overdriven guitar tone.  Helter Skelter is much closer to early metal like Black Sabbath than Jimi is.  Hendrix still has the psychedelic blues sound to his playing.  No amount of tube amp breakup makes that metal.  The driving, bass heavy, distorted sound of the guitars on the Helter Skelter gives it a darker, more menacing sound that just doesn't exist in the Hendrix clips.

Maybe if you are considering the guitar tone and marshal stacks exclusively then it is a precursor to metal, but even then it is a bit of a stretch considering the Beatles did it earlier.  Led Zeppelin I was recorded only a few months later and if you are looking for a natural progression towards the metal sound then you have identified the wrong Jimmy.

This wasn't a doctoral thesis.

Yes, clearly not, but is it (it being "arguably the first full 100% metal - two Marshalls, 16 speakers") not the crux of the original post and not some throwaway point?  If the post were simply, "hey, check out this awesome video of Hendrix with a Marshall stack and array of speakers", then I'm sure most people would enjoy it without questioning your understanding of the metal genre.  To simply dismiss Thujone/Numbersixx/Stapsy's reasonable question/confusion with this post is unfortunate.

Deep Purple and Ritchie Blackmore are still not mentioned. This is an old recording of "Mandrake Root" from 1969.

Jimi Hendrix was not the only wonderful guitarist of his age. Think back to Deep Purple, Focus, Pink Floyd and King Crimson...
