That was one of the points I was trying to get across to them in that thread, Xnor. That 115dB peak they kept talking about would only exist in the most dynamic recordings available. Listening to DR 5-10 regular music would put them at an average of around 100dB, which is certainly not safe.

They aren't using the power they think they are, so these ridiculous amps are just that. As you say 95dB peaks for compressed music means they aren't even using half a watt, much less 2-5, or as the mindblowing post above suggested, 15-20.

Milliwatts, right? Most headphones will need a fraction of a mW, or maybe a few mW to reach 95 dB peak resulting in greater than the "safe" 85 dB average with compressed music.

anecdotally, i had a customer that was clipping the HE-6 with an amp that could swing 15Vrms but had the gain set for 5x, or 10Vrms max.  :-DD

According to solder's chart the HE-6 requires 20mW for 90dB and 632mW for 105dB.

I don't understand where there would be clipping. Maybe it was the other way around?

HE-6 cannot even remotely be considered as a standard headphone. It's a far outlier in terms of efficiency. Nevertheless, you could even drive it with an O2 (with correct gain) if you listen to compressed music or generally at lower levels.

you're correct, i wasn't thinking  facepalm.  i don't believe he was clipping, or maybe it was the recording, but i can't imagine what one's hearing accuity could be at that level with a rock album even if it's "only peaks".

edit: this was years ago, but after thinking about it, i believe the gain was actually 8x.

Just updated the table, removed a few errors (from erroneously merged tables) and added a few headphones.
I hope it's more accurate this time.  ::)

The link is the same one as in the first post.

Tried to use your sheet to show the HE-6 crowd they are retarded, but they wouldn't listen at all, accusing me of starting myths that they don't actually need that 200W @8ohm power amp to drive headphones.  p:8

Well y'see, they crank up a thousand watts but then complain about the noise floor and no useable range on the pot, so they slap on L-pads to bring it back down.

Last week I was trying to push them into using autotransformers to correct for power mismatch. It almost worked too  :P
