I recommend this for the "illusion". Low tech binaural probably mic'd mixed and mastered by autistic German sound engineers with low tech tools and (obviously no marketing budget) in the 70s.

I mean it is nice is that it goes give you this "sphere of sound." That itself is impressive and does remind me of the movie theater. But honestly, the drums 360 degrees around only seem to come from the sides and slightly to the back. The imaging is really unstable. I think it's probably just me. It's possible these things just don't work on me, similar to how some people can't see optical illusions.

I'd bet the most important factor is that they haven't measured and compensated for the cans you're listening to. As "The King of Ring" I'm sure you'd understand that the psychoacoustic cues (mostly in the 2k to 8k region, I'd bet) can get pretty confuserated with any ringing that may be happening with the headphones. Frankly I'm surprised it works at all with uncompensated cans. Didn't work nearly as well with my uncompensated Momentums as it did with the compensated HD 239s.

So are you serious - this was made specially for the HD239?

I mean, I do get three options in the iPhone app (IEM, on-ear, over-ear, etc.) So I'm wondering if what you I heard was "watered" down or made generic for the masses on the iPhone app.

Did Hans Zimmer brickwall the music?

The "on-ear" selection is for the HD239. The others I don't know about. What you heard was not watered down, it's just not fully corrected because the only headphones (that I'm aware of) that have been fully corrected are the HD239. With them the result, in my experience, was much better.

I thought the music was pretty brutal. No dynamics, painful to listen to.

It sounded brickwalled to me...not quite to the Oasis extreme...but way too much master limiter for an orchestral soundtrack.

The DTS headphone X thing seemed to work from "okay" to "really well" for my hearing system, depending upon the headphone. But even in the worst case, there was still a definite feel that the sound was not coming from the headphones, but from speakers in the room.

If it sounds worse than Madonna's recent singles he sabotaged his own work...

I also downloaded the app and ran it through my HD558s and perceived direction similar to what Marv described. Also a little bright with the sample stuff.

From what I've read, the HD239 might be a bit dark/warm headphone, and if corrected might make other headphones brightly off. I almost pulled the trigger on some HD238 in the past (dunno how they compare to the HD239 given that the HD238i are still available for a juicy discount).

Still, would love to hear the app with proper compensation. Looking forward for more developments...  popcorn

Totally not surprised by Marv's conclusion.

I've given up on new "technologies" like this. To me, they are just gimmicks in hopes of earning an extra buck. I sometimes wonder if these DSP engineers understand how the ear and mastering actually work.

IMHO, the most microphones you should EVER use is 4 and only under special circumstances. In most cases, I wish they would only use 2 or 3. With proper placement and balancing, simple stereo can sound amazing. Just listen to those old Mercury Living Presence or RCA Living Stereo titles. AMAZING.

Unfortunately getting a proper stereo sound is anything but simple. Not to mention how many people have actually heard the true capabilities of a good stereo system.
