Wow, thanks blue. The advice is much appreciated, everyone. And yeah, business casual for me. Buying a suit is next on my list though (which will be another thread!).

I think a Patek would be lovely and maybe kinda sorta even an investment of sorts, but the JLC is already a bit of a something I'm wrapping my head around. I really like the MC UT Moon in stainless (which is discontinued, so I think I'll snap one up). But first, I'll check out Beuget, IWC some more, Glaushette, and Vacheron Constantin. And Frank Muller, too!

Since you're in NYC, don't forget to consider Grand Seiko. Seiko has a high-end boutique on Madison Ave. --- the only place in the US that sells the GS line (and complicated Credor, Ananta watches).

Side by side against a Rolex Milgauss, I actually feel the GS Hi-Beat has slightly better finishing quality (opinion, though --- likely not fact). Grand Seikos are quite amazing, with some of the most unique, innovative movements in the business, and hand finishing. The only thing hampering it is the fact that it is a "Seiko" (not that I have a problem with that, but others do).

Bought another Steinhart watch...



Pic not mine, and it doesn't come with all of those straps (just 2... black and blue croc.)
Love it's look. Looks quite tunning to me (at least this edition looks better than their "normal" black and white marine).

Definitely. Something about Rolex is just really off putting, particularly the all gold ones which are just gross. They are something one of Joe Pesci's characters would wear in an old Scorsese movie. The Submariner is less bad, but I still wouldn't want to actually wear one.

There are some other brands that are a bit phony but I can look past that because I like the designs, Lacroix being one. I really like their calendar retrograde, particularly the open version. This guy is definitely not stuck in 1976.

Another brand I would look at is Tudor, which is a Rolex brand at a lower price point. It is a great value for the quality of watch.

In the $10k range I like IWC, JLC, Panerai, and Rolex. Rolex owns the market in this price range.

Above that, Patek and Lange are the finest watches made today.

Indeed, as with everything else they do there's a ton of variants - power reserve, moon phase, etc, but the standard white face is very elegant. I like the Port Royal series too, but they are too bulky for my wrist. Prices are fairly reasonable too, most of the steel cases are in the $5-8K range. They do have some really bonkers tourbillions though that go for huge money.
