With Don on the grados and the senns. The HF2 was pretty decent for the used price of 300 something.. And the T1 performed very poorly especially for the price on the other headphones in its price range that properly do a number on the T1.

Sachu, what are the possible contenders in that price range to oust T1?

Paradox, HE-500, LCD-2  (yeah even with all the troubles and bad press it gets with most other mateys here) , modded vintage Yammy orthos

Now for as much shit as I give the T1, if you actually get a decent sounding pair, I would not say the HF2 is comparable.  A cherry picked, stellar sounding LCD2 r.2 would be my T1 replacement.  Paradox and HE500 are different signatures so not sure if that's a proper comparison.

To HD800 or not to HD800... Hmmm...

Depends...

During the Dutch HF-meeting some time ago I listened to a stock HD800 and a HF2 side by side with Charles Mingus music. The HF2 put a smile on my face. The stock HD800 just sounded clean.

Back then that made me think even when I had the urge to buy an HD800. A Pioneer Monitor 10 sounds clean. A K240 DF sounds more lively, less clean. Fuck it, the HD800 is good but overpriced.

These days I have the K500, clean yes. 'Fun', yes for its open construction allows you to slightly turn up the volume and it sounds a bit more lively. The HD800: I read about it and yes it is special but I still find it overpriced.

The value of the HD800, I realized back then depends on what you want and whether you want to build a system around it. The moment I can afford it without fearing for my wallet I might start hunting for a HF2 though...

HF2? Really? i didn't like it much :) But yah Miles and Mingus do have some good synergy with Grados for some reason.

When the headphone makes you smile something about it has to be right. The HD250 II Linear was even better though...

Quote (selected)
About a 1/2 year ago when we had just finished the mix of the audiophile recording ''Torn" by Carmen Gomes inc.,I took a copy of the mix with me to the RAF high end store here in Amsterdam.

They had the HD700 and the HD800 on display.I was curious as to how the mix, done on the Grimm LS 1 speakers, would translate to high end Headphones.

I must say that I was impressed!

At Sound Liaison we like a a clear placement of the instruments, really trying to make the band almost visual, and with a lot of depth and spaciousness in the sound stage.

Of the difference of the two...

I found the HD 800 absolutely fantastic for the quiet tunes,i.e.''Love in Vain'' and the version of ''Let´s go get Stoned'' with the beautiful double bass introduction.
But the last 2 tunes of the album, the louder tunes,Tom Waits "Train song'' with a slightly distorted slide guitar solo, and the version of B.B.Kings ''the Thrill is Gone ''´with the laid back 2nd line drum groove I really liked the HD 700,maybe even preferring it to the HD800.

But if I had to choose, I would go for the HD800.It really gives me the same sense of space and depth that I hear on our High End Grimm speakers, translate the sound we had in mind really well.

But maybe If you listen mostly to music with a heavy back beat, the 700 will do a great job.
But all in all fantastic Headphones.
