Supposedly the AKG K267 is an improvement over the K550. I haven't heard either. I have heard the K601 and K701 though, not a fan.

The prices for the K267 are too steep. I am curious to what share Tiesto receives from this deal...

On amazon at least K267: $267 (neat!) and K550: $269.

re: LCD2

i think removing the thick, black cloth-like material on the back of the cups and replacing it with a thinner one makes the LCD2 sounds more open. although i only tried and experienced this on an LCD2v1. completely removing the cloth will make the LCD2v1 sound very thin.

fosgate was the amp I used them on, now I remember.

I could live with an un-airy lcd2, but if it's closed it'd ideally have the benefits of being closed.  I can't imagine it sounding more closed--- maybe..

It's funny that you finally got to hear a Grado.  My journey was the exact opposite.  I started with a Grado SR60 then went to SR325i, then PS500, then LCD2.2, then HD800.  I still have my old SR60 in the drawer...the foam pads have disintegrated though.  My favorite Grado of the 3 is the PS500.  The SR60 was ok for its price.  The SR325i was unbearable.   Sold my LCD2.2 because I couldn't stand the treble.  I guess it was too dark for me since I was used to Grados.  It also sounded a little congested.  I eventually took the dive for the HD800 and never looked back.

To HD800 or not to HD800... Hmmm...

Well, until today I still wondering about the several opinions on T1 better than HD800 in terms of "musicality" and suitable for a wider music genre.

Yes nobody around me had a grado, so I've never gotten to hear one.  They've always been such a polarizing series of headphones on head-fi, so I'm glad I got to hear at least 5 of them.  PS500 is something I'd want to have to listen for an extended session, I didn't find it quite bad-- possibly even good.  It was one of the few I got through a song with and made it to a next song.

I do think T1 to be more ''musical'' of the two, but I've never heard an hd800 on 'esoteric 3000 dollar setup' that most of its fans think it deserves to be on, so..

Well, I happen to have both the T1 and the HD800 around at the moment, and the only thing i personally think the T1 has over the HD800 is that it is far far more robust so i can take it with me in public without being afraid of it breaking every time i put it on a table or something. Also it blocks a bit noise both ways because of its semi open design.

Soundwise they have a lot in common but the HD800 is cleaner sounding (darker background etc.) and has much more impact, letting you 'feel' the music aswell as hearing it, which is something i personally enjoy very much. The HD800 also seems to extend a bit further in both ends - possibly because some of the lower bass relies on impact to be noticed, of which the T1 lacks quite a bit. Soundstage is also a bit better on the HD800.
The T1 is a bit more tolerant and warm sounding though - a result of its resonance I'd imagine...

Ampwise I'm using my trusty ALO Rx Mk3b which is suprisingly one of the best amps I've come across for it apart from maybe a Beta22. The Woo amps seemed completely lack impact - imagine they might be good for more mellow Jazz or Blues though. The Mk3b just seems to play to all the HD800's natural strengts: detail, control, soundstage and then it helps a bit when the bass seems lacking to some with its circuitry for that purpose...

Not all Grados are created equal.  I'd say there are Grado's and Gradont's.

I would have to agree with Tari on the grado front. I have heard many , if not all of the offerings and the 2 that stick out in my experience have been the vintage RS1 and the HP1000-HP1.

As for the HD800, I must have heard it half a dozen times and hated the experience until I heard it on an "esoteric $$$" amp and only then did I see what the fuss was all about. I should add that one of the poorer experiences was on a $$$$ battery powered nightmare , so the dollar value does not predict the experience.
