For the record, there are loads of animes with angsty, overly emotional teenagers driving giant robots and fighting... whatever. It's just that NGE is one of the most well known. Pretty much all of the Gundam pilots are teenagers with constant friend/girl trouble, because you know, when you need someone to pilot your gazillion dollar giant robot, clearly a high school kid makes the most sense.

LOL. Thank god no high school kids in this one.

BTW, one Jaegar, only briefly seen in a flashback scene in Japan, looked like an homage to Gundam. Lots of little tidbits and nods in the movie. The design other Jaegars seemed very original though.

There is no escaping hints or homages to the old Gundam-series. For its time the first series were unique...

Interesting quotes by the directors of Pacific Rim. I think this also confirms that Del Toro is quite into anime.

>[Travic Beacham] I think tonally it’s definitely an influence, because really what blew me away the first time I saw “Evangelion” was it treated this genre, this sort of silly genre – or a genre that could be sort of silly, and could be outlandish and cartoonish – and treated it with a real sophistication. Which I really liked. I think what I identified less with in “Evangelion” was the sort of apocalypticism of it, and kind of a surrender to human neuroses or whatever…

>[Guillermo del Toro] That's one of the four animes I've never seen. I will acknowledge openly the influence of Patlabor, gladly. I'll fully acknowledge most Gaiden movies being an influence, but Evangelion, I have, and they bought it for me before the movie started and I made it a point not to watch it. I said "I don't know if it's close or not, but I don't want to be influenced," you know? Now I'm gonna watch it. I always loved the designs. I actually bought a couple of the toys because the look is fantastic. I don't know if it's the good guy or the bad guy but from a purely visual point of view I love it. I will watch it, I'm hugely influenced by anime; I have no problem with that above board but unfortunately I haven't seen Evangelion. I'm so attracted to the designs that I'd blindly go and buy all the toys but my daughter has watched it this year and said "You're gonna like it." And my daughter is my guru. My two daughters are my contact with the world.

I don't know about homage to the old gundam series, but it definitely reminded me of g-gundam a little.

As far as the movie, this was my short review on it:

"It's an entertaining movie, nothing more. It didn't quite tickle my fancy like Man of Steel.

A lot of the visuals and action sequences are great, it's just that there's so much going on-- often with a dark environment with overdone rain effects and very fast motion, that it's hard to take in everything that's going on the screen. Ironically I thought some of the better sequences were the slower sequences that allowed you to take in all the visual information and detail of the robots, monsters and surrounding sci-fi elements.

I didn't think any of the characters were particularly strong, and 3 of them (the girl and scientists) I found annoying, although there was a redeeming campy quality to the scientists.

The Jaeger hq had this bit of matrix-esque mix of low and high tech feel to me. They use all this fancy tech to create massive, complex robots and connect the pilots' brains together, but they're in a very industrial, rugged looking structure and the hallways where their tenements are remind me of rivet city in fallout3. Hell, even the scientist is using a pair of bellows ghetto-rigged to his machine that does the mind handshake thing.

The one thing I think this movie does have over superman is the 3d. It's noticeably stronger and more apparent.

If superman got an 8.5 from me I'd give this movie a 7.

Hideo Kojima is just doing what japs do best I think. "

The kojima comment was referring to a a post of someone quoting hideo kojima, creator of the mgs series, who raved so much about Pacific Rim.  In short I just think japs love their giant robots too much.  I'm not playing that off as a bad thing, but it is what it is.
