It's less about Japanese mindset and more about silly wish fulfilment fantasy for those otakus. There's a large community of those types in NA too.

I used to be into the "harem" animes as a kid- Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo, etc. Mostly for the reasons stated, I was/am a lonely guy who no woman wanted within the vicinity, let alone touch up close. Nearing 30, still a virgin, no friends, will likely live with the parents 'til I can't.

Don't worry, you'll be gaining magical powers and become a wizard once you hit 30!

How do you know I'm not already a wizard?

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

I've got a starry sky bedsheet tied neatly above my shoulders, topped with a replica Link (the elf) cap to accentuate the majesty. Pants are, as always, optional.

I remember watching Evangelion back in college.  It was the first time the anime pervy stuff started to make me feel uncomfortable.  That being said, I loved the series up into the wtf ending.

It was totally worth it though.  I ended up living in Japan for a bit and it was a great bar trick to sing the opening theme to the ladies.

Well, I saw Pacific Rim on IMAX.

Yeah, don't expect something like Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility, but take it for what it is:

AN AWESOME SPECTACLE

This is the Godzilla / Ultraman movie that I would have wanted to make / go see as a kid. Not like Evangelion, but it does touch upon human issues of loneliness, isolation, feeling out of place, etc (but not in the weird-ass / perv Japanese anime way - more like how Hellboy does it.) I also loved the fact that it was a love story without it being a love story.

Lots of action, but the movie went by fast, unlike the last hour of non-stop action of Transformers 3 which I found unbearable.

Has Hellboy, a little Armageddon (Michael Bay), and a little Top Gun mixed in. Definitely a Del Toro movie. There were a few scenes where I was like OMG, that is so ghey/stupid/makes-no-sense, but so yet fucking awesome. As I said, Godzilla / Ultraman. Maybe a tidbit from Voltron.

Had two minor complaints:
  • One had to be careful listening to all dialog. It seemed that lots of little details had to be crammed in to make the movie fit 2 hours. I bet lots of footage was cut.
  • Does everyone have to keeping shouting? I don't think there was a scene in the movie where someone didn't shout.

I had a late lunch afterward and went into a food coma / afternoon nap. All I could dream about was how awesome the the movie was. I am seriously considering to go see the movie again.

BTW, the 3D, although much of it faked, is well done. My main complaint with 3D in general is that it has relied too much on gimmicks (knife flying toward audience), and scenery never "popped".

I can only assume the Del Toro was involved in the 3D process. Again, it was faked, but there was a lot of artistry (intent) behind the 3D effects to make things pop and differentiate depth with layers. As someone who does not care about 3D, I actually enjoyed the 3D aspect of this movie.
