Headphone and IEM pr0n thread
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:01:38 PM »

Ever wondered how a headphone or IEM looks "under the hood", if you catch the drift?

You need to wonder no more.

In this thread, please post naked sound pieces only. Normal porn will be met with a request to kindly walk the plank.

To kick off the thread, I'll attach some pics of my own.

For starters, mostly dismantled Brainwavz B2.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to remove the damper from the nozzle. In fact, I've managed to pierce one - they have delicate membranes/grilles.
The driver is of course Knowled TWFK, wired in an inverted polarity configuration, because China.

Dismantling procedure involves skillful use of xacto knife and pincers.

Sleek Audio SA6. Truly an American design.
Nothing is possible to take apart non-destructively. Sorry about RTV silicone glue in the pic. Remains from my RE400 mod.

The shell is a full plastic mold (ABS?) with a shiny part on top, glued together with a strong rubber glue.

The armature is Sonion 26A005/8, decent FR but shelved highs and quite high THD, similar to the one used in Astrotec AM90 - Knowles SR. Not too much 3rd order from what I could hear, which is a major plus.
Cable was  poo and the connector is a non-standard with a central pin.

Has switchable dampers in PET push in shells, all by Sonion. They contain a fine mesh of a varying fineness. The Treble minus one is the finest. Bass ports are just pieces of silicone rubber shaped to fit in the port. They do little to the sound other than making it more or less closed in. Minor effect on either distortion or bass response.
The build quality was supposedly improved in later SA6R, it was also made serviceable.

Mmmmm, IEM porn. Could be useful for IEM modding.

Beyerdynamic T70p.

Almost a non-shit design, except it went wrong in a few places.
1) Too little shell damping means 8k spike remains.
2) Pads not dampened enough giving slight midbass bloat.
3) Velour pads are just wrong - it's a vented shell, should use pleather instead.
4) Cheap plastic mounting rings for the driver glued with weak chinese rubber glue - does not help harmonic distortion.
5) Front foam pads used as a filter reduce sound quality slightly - the resonance is higher than their area of effect.

Also I tore the wires to the driver while taking it apart for the first time... and soldering it back will be hard. These are hair wires.

Components left to right, top to bottom:
- Driver baffle and spider - covered with cellulose - possibly filtering out highest end.
- Stock velour pad, with a few tiny vents at the bottom plastic side
- The Headphone Shell. Mostly made of some high quality plastic with the Y parts from cut aluminum.
- Outer driver mounting ring
- Front foam pad made from 1mm low/medium density open cell foam.
- Inner driver mounting ring - with PCB that should have the driver and cable soldered in
- ~40 mm Mylar driver with Tesla magnet - the magnet is indeed very strong, beats hard disk magnets.
- Back foam pad with sticky glue on the bottom - attached inside the shell. Made from 4mm hard high density closed cell foam.

More in-depth pics of the shell may or may not follow.

There are times I'll discount acoustics for comfort and if I'm listening to a full-size beyer then I've already made my choice. I don't know whether the T70's pads may differ, but I am a huge fan of the feel of the velour 770/880/990 ones.

SA6 was frustrating.

The filtered swappable nozzles tend to stay fastened to the eartips more than the housing. Therefore whenever I removed the IEM, I tend to get the IEM body out sans the silicone tips and nozzle.....

Mine had a converse issue where the dampers were almost impossible to swap out. Needed lots of force.

Nice concept, but bad implementation. Also it is a single BA, good one, but still just one.

Eh, I get velour ones to always catch hair and scrape my face. Pleather only gets slightly hot.
However Beyer pleather seems to be the best out there in this regard. Tje main proble is that these pads are waytoo flat.
