most euphonic amps
« on: April 03, 2013, 09:39:48 PM »

Hi everyone,

Which headphone amps are the most euphonic, liquid and lush sounding?
Could the Pathos Aurium or the Audio Note HE-6 Kit be candidates?

I'm also interested in euphonic portable amps.  Maybe the Portaphile 627X or Decware Zen Head?

Leben CS300 is definitely euphonic...It's like syrup.

Think I've heard the Leben/Syrup thing before...

Many members here seem to be turned off from the very lush/euphonic/syrupy amps, whatever you want to call them, so I don't know how much experience you can expect.  Not many who are hooked on euphonics here.

Certainly picking two random amps that you've noticed elsewhere online and expecting any kind of comparison on a site with so few members is quite unlikely.

Some of the more lush/syrupy brands I've run across (yes, it pretty much runs in brands) are Woo Audio, Shindo, and Leben.  Euphony implies that it is pleasing to the ear though, and I will say that is definitely up for debate.

As for portables, that sounds like you're describing ianmediums SR-71B!

Just grab something from Cary or Leben - or Woo WA2 if you are poor. Pathos and AudioNote may be too accurate.

I have to say, as far as euphonic goes, my favorite DAC is the Eximus.  The amp is shit, but the Eximus DAC really seduces me as far as inaccurate goes.  I would go w/ a Super 7 so I could roll/tune the degree of euphony versus neutrality w/ the Eximus.  I know Marv hates it but he likes the W-T-F-thousand headphones so.... ;)

Favorite euphonic amp?  Don't think I have one, maybe a Decware if I had to.  I'd say the Stratus flirts at the edge of neutrality/euphony which is why its sound is so broadly appealing.  I'd go w/ the Stratus as my number one euphonic amp but others might not find it euphonic at all.

An Eximus and Stratus rig is almost Muppetface worthy aesthetically.  I'd prefer that sound to a Leben for sure.

Portable amp for what?  A tube portable will not be ideal for an ortho if that's what you are thinking about.

Nope. The Eximus + S7 is still too accurate. Leben all the way.

Oops.  Disregard, my definition of euphonic was waaay off.

If by euphonic, someone means shit, maybe an Isabellina then?  Perhaps w/ a Final Audio Hemholtz resonator plugged into ones rectum.  What could be more pleasing?

Is the Continental V3 that inaccurate?  I use the V3 when I am on the go and I didn't think it was that bad.  It definately got better after 200 or so hours.  In terms of being lush/euphonic I thought it was quite close to the Burson Soloist that I heard.  To be fair that is about as far as my listening experience goes.

edit:  The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to agree about the continental.  The continental lacks the precise imaging that I would associate with solid state amplifiers (i.e. the opposite of lush/euphonic). The continental doesn't stop the Grado RS-1 I inherited from sounding like shit though, so perhaps it isn't quite the most euphonic  :)p17
