I read somewhere that Doc felt this early recording (his first?) was the best distillment of his musical vision, and his favorite recording that he had made. I couldn't find the quote. But it's a great album and from what I've heard of his music, I would agree. It feels real and raw, closer to what you might hear if you found him playing with some friends at home before he was "discovered" and produced, etc.
