Saw her in concert after this record got released - her voice is even better live.
Got some Tallest Man On Earth playing this morning. One of my favorite folk singers at the moment. Reminiscent of early Bob Dylan.
Yes! I love this guy, he's one of my favorites as well. I'm really amazed that he's not American given the way his music sounds.
Will be followed by this one:

i need to listen to this. also real stereo?! no way! that's even better and makes me want to track it down more. hard finding actual real ''stereo'' recordings anymore since mostly everything nowadays is done in joint-stereo, not real stereo(no wonder there is so much misconception of stereo. if anyone heard what real stereo could do they be kissing away their HT set-ups bye-bye).

So true!!
The actual original Disney soundtracks sound fantastic. Lion King, Little Mermaid and Aladdin sound freakin' amazing! Fantastic dynamics and sound all around.
The new DVD's and Blu-Rays leave much to be desired.
Perfect complements to the Lion King

Frank Sinatra - Only The Lonely
Trying to make an accurate re-mix
remix? it's gonna be club re-mix right? you know, make hard kicking drums, euphoric melody and most of all don't forget to give ol' franky a high-pitch in the vocals so he be all chipmunk like. chicks love that stuff and they be like ''ohh LFF i want your babies!'' cause they're crazy na' mean.
Fo' Sho! I be tellin' them bitches to lay off my swag but they be all up in ma house wantn' me da b they baby daddy and whatnot and I be like bitches please, I ain't got no times to be babyin you baby cause I got a bitch and I b all busy and shit remixin ma shiznit.
NO. It's not a club remix. It's a digital remix using work parts I created. It's a complicated way of fixing an album when you don't have the work parts. Think of it like removing the essence from flowers, fruits, and spices to make a perfume. Once I have the ingredients ready, I mix them to come up with a better sounding (hopefully!) version. Sometimes it works wonders....other times it becomes an EPIC FAIL of ginormous proportions.
Thought LFF would get a kick out of this: http://youtu.be/d9NF2edxy-M (http://youtu.be/d9NF2edxy-M)

Yup!
It's an awesome cover. That bad is great BTW. Highly recommend their other covers.
From the covers (I haven't listened to any of them), they all seems to be... Symphonic Power Metal, am I right? I was a long time metal listening then I converted.

Nice! Have you seen them live? I've caught their Bob Marley Bday tribute a couple times. Probably the best Bob Marley covers I've ever heard.

In their time, the following were real Latinamerican hits. They resonate in yours truly as they bring back some good 'ol memories :)
Mana is a Mexican (Guadalajara state) group. "Rayando el Sol" (mid-80's) is my favorite in Mana's repertoire. Carlos Vives is a Colombian singer and his mid '90s interpretation of the Colombian vallenato "La Gota Fria" became an instant super hit in whole Latinamerica.

Hank Mobley -- "Soul Station"
This album and a glass of Scotch go so well together. It instantly transports me into a smoky jazz club in 1960. Great bluesy and soulful playing by Mobley backed by an all-star rhythm section.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

An underground classic. This album ruled my senior year of high school.

Interesting. Did that come out this year?
I listened to Revolution Vol. 2 a lot back in college. The one he did after that (3rd World, I think) wasn't very good so I stopped checking for him.

Do you have a preference for a particular master?
As with most music...I listen to my own master.
That said...try to find the 1st gen, first issue from Japan. It's bright like most 80's music but it sounds SOOO much better than the regular current re-issues.
was it "Somewhere"? it's on my "must see list" but so little so time. "Lost in Translation" is epic in the most understated way possible. not a dud on the whole album. everything just flows. i would love to see Phoenix live.

Please inform us if it's a stayer. Their first album was quite a treat...
Update 29/08: "Coexist" is playing, unassuming but "Fiction" starts to get interesting, first listen...
Update 29/08 II: the "Californication" link I posted earlier is playing and the new XX is not as sleep inducing as "50 Words For Snow" but I only liked "Fiction". For now some peppers to spice up the sensation of sitting behind a desk...
Loved it on first listen.

WTF, since when does Taylor sing about driving Maseratis? And what's with the weird ass sound effects (Red)?
Anywho, some flashbacks to the 80's. I forgot how much Prince could shred a guitar and Sheila E could jam the percussion.

Not sure how I stumbled upon it, maybe someone on this board recommended it? Either way, I like it so far.

As a big fan of their earlier album Empty Streets, I'm not sure where they're headed musically.
This latest single seems a bit more electro-pop, and less ethereal.

Funny thing about "Sleepwalk." When you play it for people who know their rock history a little bit, very often their initial reaction is "wow, that's so East LA." When you tell them that Santo and Johnny were paisans from Brooklyn, you can see the cognitive dissonance.
Ironically, when they were starting out, Los Lobos often included "Sleepwalk" in their live shows.
Sigh No More is one of my all time favorite albums. Not one song I don't really dislike from it.
Babel is pretty bleh.
That Angus Stone keeps popping up here. I grabbed it after the first time I saw it hear and it's been getting a lot of play time with me too.
Over the years, I haven't found R&B I can say I'm into (besides the vintage stuff), but this is cool:

I never really realized how many crazy harmonies the Bangles had in their songs till I heard them on the Comedy Bang Bang Podcast doing their songs acoustically. When I was growing up, they were just that "Walk like an Egyptian" group. It is fun to go back and listen to those songs with a different ear.

Isnt that record from BOB? Did they release any mastering info? I'm weary of those guys.
I need some advice on finding some good Doors releases. I totally dig 'em, but for some reason I struggle to enjoy some of the albums I have when they do that heavy split instruments deal to one channel or the other. With headphones it just drives me nuts. Speakers, I don't mind as much. I'm probably not explaining this well...

Well since you have a turntable I'd suggest the recent Analogue Productions 45s.
Remastered from the original tapes. Analog front to back. Best I've ever heard the big 6 sound.
If you want digital the new SACDs aren't bad at all but some people prefer the DCC Doors releases. The new vinyl is magic though (but it's expensive).
My only word of caution is that when MT said that Doors set would be expensive, he really meant it! :-DD
I managed to get over the shock and grabbed a set, it's on it's way to me now. I've cursed Morbid for the suggestion, but I know I'll be praising him when I get a listen!
About to pop the shrink-wrap off "Trouble Will Find Me," the new The National album.

Did you get the vinyl or CD? I've read of folks getting duplicate sides of copies with the vinyl, rather than the whole album.
It's a shame the deluxe version doesn't come out for another month or so. Cannot wait to spin this on vinyl though, as their previous albums have been better on LP than digital.

I randomly caught their set in April and they were electric. So much energy in their set. I haven't had a chance to check out the album yet though.

I'm with you guys on this. I loved their Tron movie soundtrack so much and when RAM came out, I felt like I was listening to my uncle's 70s music (a la Bee Gees, etc) and it immediately turned me off. Not my cup of tea. poo

The new Queens is good, but far from great. Streaming it today didn't convince me to buy. I'll give it a few more tries. Generally it just lacked any kind of energy or dynamic to get me hooked. It felt a bit forced and by the numbers or formulaic. YMMV.
Same here. Good to have a very special disk to rescue me from the scalding heat of summer!
ALL GLORY TO NUMBERSIXX
I was a big Daft Punk fan back in the day. I saw them live in 1997. The thing is, like many 'producers' give them a bunch of musicians, pick up an instrument and just jam, write a song, they're lost. Technically I can't really fault it. But the same went for Yngwie Malmsteen. All technique, no soul.
Bleep have just pre-released the new BOC album on download for those who ordered the vinyl/cd

Thanks, just listening. The harp is one of my favourite instruments. You are familiar with Joanna Newsom?
Looks like you're on an ambient trip, #6.
I hope you're familiar with the rest of Eno's work! Apollo is just the tip of the iceberg.
Starting the day old school.

Were you able to get the box set for $79? Supposedly some retailers had a pricing mistake of putting that set up for $79 or something, and they honored it for a lot of people during pre-orders.
You made it one song further than I did... :)p13:)p2
Watch out, you'll get Purrin all hot and bothered with that one!

I listened to that one today. What did you think of it? I don't think I was able to give it the attention it needs... it was good background music at work, but I think to appreciate it you need to pay attention.

fuck off, it's a great album. i wish she didn't use auto-tune for the "modern" production values - she has pipes and doesn't need it.
I spotified Berserin Quartet last night after you posted. Pretty trippy. They've got a lot going on in the tracks. Nice change of pace, thanks for posting it.

Nice line up UB! Great music and bad hair!
One of my favorite bands in the past few years, The Lighthouse and the Whaler. Seriously, take a listen. They're way better than most of the other random indie pop/rock bands like the Lumineers that seem to be popular.
The Lighthouse and the Whaler -- Nice! I like. :)p6
I'd say more Vampire Weekend than Lumineers...
Me likes lots ZD! Loved "Manhattan" ... dammit, the whole album is pretty solid! :money:

Los Van Van's "Songo" combines Cuban & Latin rhythms with a slightly 80ties sound in production. This album becomes better after every listen. I consider myself lucky to have the 1988 pressing...

When "Get up, get into it, get involved" plays and JB screams "Don't do nobody else. Jump back. Dig yourself. 'Cause you're doing your thing..." over that solid Soul groove I cannot resist singing along. One of his best underrated tracks...
The entire compilation is one of the best James Brown & The JB's compilations you can find.

As much as I love the instrumentation of Monoliths & Dimensions, I wish Sunn would do a more experimental and abstract new album along the lines of their White series.
Actually, the live version of Monoliths & Dimensions is much weirder than the album.

I don't know if they damaged it with distortion on purpose or if they're deaf. The cleanliness of the rest of it tells me that they're making or chasing a fad. Then again, it may just be Spotify destroying it. I'll have to listen somewhere else to see.
[checking Amazon and Rhapsody]
Yeah... it's the recording. Spotify's quality makes it more apparent but they trashed the kick drum and a few other bits.
Neat fact: they're from the place me and my wife lived when we got married.

The story behind "Devil's Trill" starts with a dream. Tartini allegedly told the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he dreamed that The Devil appeared to him and asked to be his servant. At the end of their lessons Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill—the devil immediately began to play with such virtuosity that Tartini felt his breath taken away. The complete story is told by Tartini himself in Lalande's Voyage d'un François en Italie (1765 - 66):(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qJZR%2BRPNL._SX300_.jpg)
"One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and - I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me."
critic Michael G. Nastos wrote of the album: "A duet recording between pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall is one that should retain high expectations to match melodic and harmonic intimacies with brilliant spontaneous musicianship. Where this recording delivers that supposition is in the details and intricacy with which Evans and Hall work, guided by simple framings of standard songs made into personal statements that include no small amounts of innovation... At only 32 and a half minutes, it's disappointing there are no bonus tracks and/or additional material for a CD-length reissue, but Intermodulation still remains a precious set of music from these two great modern jazz musicians(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EfH7QQM5cK8/TD1Ox7uJAbI/AAAAAAAAFw4/RsNXxLirVto/s1600/Bill+Evans+%26+Jim+Hall+-+Intermodulation+-+Front.jpg)
Review by Scott Yanow(http://ecmreviews.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/at-the-blue-note.jpg)
The six-CD box set Keith Jarrett at the Blue Note fully documents three nights (six complete sets from June 3-5, 1994) by his trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Never mind that this same group has already had ten separate releases since 1983; this box is still well worth getting. The repertoire emphasizes (but is not exclusively) standards, with such songs as "In Your Own Sweet Way," "Now's the Time," "Oleo," "Days of Wine and Roses," and "My Romance" given colorful and at times surprising explorations. Some of the selections are quite lengthy (including a 26-and-a-half-minute version of "Autumn Leaves") and Jarrett's occasional originals are quite welcome; his 28-and-a-half-minute "Desert Sun" reminds one of the pianist's fully improvised Solo Concerts of the 1970s. Throughout the three nights at the Blue Note, the interplay among the musicians is consistently outstanding. Those listeners concerned about Jarrett's tendency to "sing along" with his piano have little to fear for, other than occasional shouts and sighs, he wisely lets his piano do the talking.

Bonjour, this album is like a good coffee. Just add more harmonies, rhythms patterns, bass lines, melodies and Trance goodness ahoy
The 9 pieces of music were performed live in the studio in front of a select audience. The musicians were placed in front of a stereo pair of microphones with additional spot microphones on each instrument. The musicians were playing without headphones, the reason being that we believe that when we get the musicians to play together in the same room, without headphones, it creates a number of musical and technical benefits:
As they are not ''separated'' by the headphones, the musicians, in order to hear each other are forced to create a natural and musical balance, a balance which is then easily captured by the main stereo pair of microphones. Because of the natural and musical balance the need for compression to control levels is no longer necessary. Since everybody is in the same room, the boxed sound which is so common in many modern recordings is absent and the sound of the room helps ''glue'' the sound of the recording.

I'd like to get a Duke Ellington album (yeah, I just caught American Hustle and loved "Jeep's Blues"), but which one?
Really loved the big band feel of "Jeep's Blues". Can any pirates recommend me a CD that'd have more like that?
I've been listening to Opeth's new album, "Pale Communion."
Still need to give it a few listens to wrap my head around it, but it's hard to compare to their other work (yes, even "Heritage"). Sorta-kinda reminds me of "Damnation" and "Ghost Reveries" with some "Storm Corrosion" and "The Raven that Refused to Sing" thrown in. The latter two aren't Opeth...one is a collaboration album with Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson, and the latter of those is Steve Wilson's latest solo album. "Pale Communion" is not a particularly heavy album but has its heavy moments. So far I am digging it.
Yup, the two have clearly influenced each other a great deal over the past decade or so.
I get tired of bands that do that same thing over and over. I am more than happy with Opeth's heavy albums and am in love with the new direction they're taking as well. I think it would be hard for them to top "Ghost Reveries" or "Blackwater Park" even if they wanted to do another heavy album.
But, yeah, "Pale Communion" sounds a lot like "TRTRTS," but in a very good way. Also I think the album sounds good from an audio perspective.

Wow, what an amazing find. For anyone who hasn't seen this, it's a gem. I found this on my YouTube page of all places.
Here is one of the later illustrations of the blues hitting the UK, turning on fans and musicians alike. Ironically, it would be English musicians who would catch the fever and take up the blues as a cause and ultimately turn America on to its own music. Copyright infringements aside, musicians like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker gained popularity with the American public as a result.
The feel of the music and energy transmitted from these musicians are very powerful. Simply put, this is the source of the blues on display. Arguably, it would be unreproducible by other artists that would come later.
From a bass perspective, Willie Dixon is undeniable. Unrelenting and flawless as a player, he's the one taking charge of the timing of the band without question. A true bass virtuoso. Never minding he was also one of the most prolific blues songwriters of his time.

RIP Bobby Keys
He's about 3:15 in though the whole songs kicks ass
http://youtu.be/3vtILjo26ew
From Richard's Bio "Life," Keith gives Keys the liberty of describing when they met:
But Bobby Keys should be allowed to tell the tale of our first meeting, since this is a Texan story. He flatters me, but in this case I have allowed it.
Bobby Keys:
I first met Keith Richards physically in San Antonio, Texas. I was so biased against that man before I actually met him. They recorded a song, "Not Fade Away," by a guy named Buddy Holly, born in Lubbock, Texas, same as me. I said, "Hey, that was Buddy's song. Who are these pasty-faced, funny-talking, skinny-legged guys to come over here and cash in on Buddy's song? I'll kick their asses!" I didn't care much for the Beatles. I kind of secretly liked them, but I saw the death of the saxophone unraveling before my eyes. None of these guys have saxes in their bands, man! I'm going to be playing Tijuana Brass shit for the rest of my life. I didn't think, "Great, we're going to be on the same show." I was playing with a guy named Bobby Vee, who had a hit at the time called "Rubber Ball" ("I keep bouncing back to you"), and we were headlining the show until They came on, and then they were headlining the show. And this was Texas, man. This was my stomping ground. We were all staying at the same hotel in San Antonio, and they were out on the balcony, Brian and Keith, and I think Mick. I went out and listened to them, and there was some actual rock and roll going on there, in my humble opinion. And of course I knew all about it, given it was invented in Texas and me being present at its birth. And the band was really, really good, and they did "Not Fade Away" actually better than Buddy ever did it. I never said that to them or anybody else. I thought maybe I had judged these guys too harshly. So the next day we must have played three shows with them, and about the third time I was in the dressing room with them, they were all talking about the American acts, how before they went on stage they all changed clothes. Which we did. We went on with our black mohair suits and white shirts and ties, which was stupid, because it was nine hundred degrees outside, summertime in San Antonio. They were saying, "Why don't we ever change clothes?" And they said, "Yeah, that's a good idea." I'm expecting them to whip out some suits and ties, but they just changed clothes with each other. I thought that was great. You got to realize that the vision, the image, according to 1964 US rock-and-roll standards, was mohair suit and tie, and nicey-nicey, ol' boy next door. And all of a sudden here comes this truckload of English jackflies, interlopers, singing a Buddy Holly song! Damn! I couldn't really hear all that well, amplifiers and PAs being what they were, but man, I felt it. I just fucking felt it, and it made me smile and dance. They didn't dress alike, they didn't do sets, they just broke all the fucking rules and made it work, and that is what enchanted the shit out of me. So, being inspired by this, the next day I'd got my mohair suit out and put the trousers on, and my toenails split the seam down the front, and I didn't have anything else to wear. So I wore my shirt and tie and put on Bermuda shorts and cowboy boots. I didn't get fired. I got "What are you... How dare... What is fucking going on, man?" It redefined a lot of stuff for me. The American music scene, the whole set of teenage idols and clean-cut boys from next door and nice little songs, all that went right out the fucking window when these guys showed up! Along with the press, "Would you let your daughter," all that stuff, forbidden fruit. Anyway, somehow they noticed what I did, and I noticed what they did, and we just kind of met there, really just brushed paths. And then I ran into them again in LA when they were doing the T.A.M.I. show. I discovered that Keith and I had the same birthday, both born 12/18/43. He told me, "Bobby, you know what that means? We're half man and half horse, and we got a license to shit in the streets." Well, that's just one of the greatest pieces of information I'd ever received in my life! The whole heart and soul of this band is Keith and Charlie. I mean, that's apparent to anybody who's breathing, or has a musical bone in his body. That is where the engine room is. I'm not a schooled musician, I can't read music, I never had any professional training. But I can feel stuff, and when I heard him playing guitar, it reminded me so much of the energy I heard from Buddy and I heard from Elvis. There was something there that was the real deal, even though he was playing Chuck Berry. It was still the real deal, you know? And I'd heard some pretty good guitar players coming out of Lubbock. Orbison came from Vernon, a few hours away, I used to listen to him, and Buddy at the skating rink, and Scotty Moore and Elvis Presley would come through town, so I'd heard some pretty good guitar players. And there was just something about Keith that immediately reminded me of Holly. They're about the same size; Buddy was a skinny guy, had bad teeth. Keith was a mess. But some folks, they just got a look in their eye, and he looked dangerous, and that's the truth.

Machine head was my intro to DP Mk II so that will always be the standout for me. The Hammond XBR was the sound that drew into the fold. Ritchie just grew on me over the years and IMO, I don't think Page was better than him (and I love Led Zep as well).

Just got this CD in the mail today, Mahler 9 transcribed for chamber group: 2 violin, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 bass, 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 2 horn, 1 trumpet, 1 accordion, 1 piano, 2 percussion (17 people)! Just listening to 1st mvt but so far it is a refreshing, intimate take on an epic piece, like the Das Lied for chamber orchestra transcribed by Schoenberg.

I always liked the sound of a spanish/classical guitar. Always sounds lighter and not as piercing like regular guitars with steel/brass strings. I love the wider neck/fret board as well. Perfect for a guy like me with big hands. I like the sound how good nylon strings resonate as well. Something about it.
Why does everyone think this is IM's worst album???

Compared to their previous albums, Yes. I stopped buying their albums after this. They still are one of my all time favorite psychedelic artists because of all their previous albums. They choose to walk a different path, that's their prerogative as artists.Honestly, I prefer the original mix of Bust a Move.
Only saving grace is this album has a remix of "Bust a Move" - one of my fav IM tracks.

I'm listening to Daft Punk RAM as I test some headphone ear pad damping schemes. It's an well-mastered album with a lot of different dynamics, timbres, ambiances, simultaneous instruments. I just realized that there are bells/piano (still to sure) on Lose Yourself to Dance. It is present at the beginning and begins to play a harmony, more noticeably, at eight seconds. Nice. What release? CD, digital?CD ripped to server for JRiver Playback via yggdrasil ZDSE HD800 / TH900.
Good song, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin made a love baby called Birth of Joy. The drummer is Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and Ian Paice good. This the second time I am listening and my inner metal head is rejoicing.
Hey this sounds promising. Thanks for the find!
Buddy Rich good? I wouldn't necessarily say so :)
Apparently the drummer is also pretty good at Funk. If that is so then he must have Clyde Stubblefield levels of controls over minute timing, high hats and cymbals. When a drummer is good at Funk, really good enough to keep a groove going you can keep your hard hitters. Drummers who can fill in and keep grooves going can immerse in the music and create Neil Peart and King Crimson level master pieces of rhythm and pace.
I should stop now before I write an essay about why I love good drumming in music.
P.S. Clyde Stubblefield drummed on this master piece of Free Funk. When later Maceo Parker joins in the outro I reach a state of bliss that is best encapsulated by the great JB, "Ain't it funky." Rest in peace JB.

Love me some Deerhunter! Also, love Bradford Cox's other project, Atlas Sound equally.+2
This new album by members of Sigur Ros: Circe. Normally I'm against band's side projects, but this one is incredible. Might even have something in it for you classical listeners out there:

Currently listening to M83 - Hurry Up We're Dreaming.I'm way late, but fuck this song is good. I remember the first time I heard it, but that's a sentimental story I'll keep to myself. It's something that ingrained itself on my memory though.

Truth be told, this group is too hot to handle. Deep Purple is about my maximum.
One of my fav albums in 2015.I'm going to have to sample this album more. Kinda has some phrasing in the first song, like Emiliana Torrini
