Good production and good lyrics. A refreshing listen, Pop can still be this good.

I've been listening to Opeth's new album, "Pale Communion."

Still need to give it a few listens to wrap my head around it, but it's hard to compare to their other work (yes, even "Heritage"). Sorta-kinda reminds me of "Damnation" and "Ghost Reveries" with some "Storm Corrosion" and "The Raven that Refused to Sing" thrown in. The latter two aren't Opeth...one is a collaboration album with Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson, and the latter of those is Steve Wilson's latest solo album. "Pale Communion" is not a particularly heavy album but has its heavy moments. So far I am digging it.

I'm giving it a listen right now. Steven Wilson's dna is pretty much embedded in Opeth, which is not a bad thing. I much prefer this to Heritage, but I do miss the heaviness of Blackwater Park.

Yup, the two have clearly influenced each other a great deal over the past decade or so.

I get tired of bands that do that same thing over and over. I am more than happy with Opeth's heavy albums and am in love with the new direction they're taking as well. I think it would be hard for them to top "Ghost Reveries" or "Blackwater Park" even if they wanted to do another heavy album.

But, yeah, "Pale Communion" sounds a lot like "TRTRTS," but in a very good way. Also I think the album sounds good from an audio perspective.

Totally agree on the aspect of repetition. It reminds me of a comment about Paul Weller. He was likened to a strawberry milkshake. If you like strawberry milkshake you're going to enjoy it every time, but that's all you are ever going to get, over and over and over.

It's good to see artist taking risks and going off in new directions. As a fan of NIN from the beginning there were moments when I was like  facepalm. It must be hard for artists to have the creative/financial freedom to do this. You build up a core following then risk losing them?

One would need a lot of talent and even bigger balls.
