Oh man CEE TEE, I'm a huge Gong fan. They're a "true" psychedelic band (as in, they tap into a certain mindset rather than just jam aimlessly for hours --- not that there's anything wrong with that, mind).
I left my body on the bed
And flew away inside my head
To dive right thru the moon and find
A perfect world inside my mind.
Also worth checking out if you like this kind of stuff:
July (self-titled from 1968)
Small Faces
Kaleidoscope
T2 (It'll All Work Out In Boomland)
Bachdenkel (Lemmings)
Pluto (self titled)
Fraction (Moon Blood)
Fifty Foot Hose
The Incredible String Band
Ash Ra
Van Der Graaf Generator
And, of course, Hawkwind
These days you can usually find similar vibes with anything featuring Cotton Casino's warbly vox. Some of Acid Mother Temple's stuff goes there, especially the more pastoral stuff, but a lot of the time they go into heavy freakout mode which is sort of something else entirely. Their 60-minute-long cover of Gong's "Master Builder" is pretty epic tho. It's pretty much impossible to track down, but if you can find anything by The Pardons (esp. "Charlie's Pardons") then go for it. Also anything by Lamp Of The Universe.
This was all part of my quintessential stoned-out-of-my-mind soundtrack as a college undergrad. Well, that plus a lot of dirty south rap and really bad 80s thrash metal.
Don't judge me.
