The Musical Pink Panthers(Stax Lambda pro mod)
« on: March 17, 2013, 06:18:08 PM »

alrighty then guys. all this talk bout dawgs and stuff is getting old  :)p13

so i decided to take the r-19 mineral wool pads i cut myself that i had in there and used R-19 fiberglass instead to try out. of course too cause fiberglass is more flexible i was able to of course pack bit more inside the casing. then after i saw the pink inside looking pretty cool, i came to idea of calling it the pink panthers lol. well my idea was too since the fiberglass is much less dense than the mineral wool it will allow more openness in a way while maintaining good backwave midrange absorption. to my surprise it actually worked. it worked helping the midrange out by bringing up sounding more clear and not as weird hollowness it has without nothing in the casing(i guess that's what recessed midrange sounds like).

it also made it bit more bright in a way too. i got the idea since the pads are very worn i decided to visit local walmart for some foam to cut and rise the pads abit. while there i say these cloths there which were very thin and i saw the one with the musical notes and i was like ''i have to use this!''. i used it to replace the clear crappy speaker cloth i originally used to protect the drivers. not only did it make it look better but the cloth helped a bit with the highs. still bright but much less and still lots of air(why i loved the pros in the first place).

the midrange sounds nice and clear and better then it did and love it but i have no idea way to tell if it's still bit recessed or not. bass is super tight but even though the pros is known for their low-end i feel it starts rolling off below 50hz. i don't know though.

anyhoo, here it is.

That may very well be the cutest set of Lambdas I've ever seen. Love the musical note pattern.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

now i tried adding in the r-19 mineral wool with r-19 fiberglass and while it was a pain and stuff. it seem to clear up midrange even more where midrange is the absolute showcase and super clear and resolving but with sacrifice of bass cause it seems lower then before but i suspected this. makes the brightness come out bit more as well. what was surprising the pros seem more ''open'' sounding this way. i'm guessing from the increase perception of air. think of it sounding ''kinda'' like a super charged SA5000.

EDIT: i notice the lambdas will only sound bright when my interface is set to +4dbu and sounds darker in the top area at -10dbv. any idea why? i wonder if my source is causing any form of harmonic distortion? my interface is hooked directly to the stax srm-212 using 6' rca to 1/4'' plugs

EDIT2: nevermind. tried earlier and must been in my head or something. also correction for above for description of what they sound like now is a super charged hybrid of DF's and SA5000

EDIT 3: i like to mention all i use is a little srm-212 for the pros so i have no idea if a transformer box using power amps change overall response especially in the bass. the pros even without the mods seem tad bit less in the bass compared to the sr-202 i also have here.

Kudos on the great mod. Add some silver paint coat or rainbow colors (preferably pink) on top please for maximum 80s factor.

Pity they're too large (vertically) for my noggin, which was never Floats-approved - I get bad seal, would need some very fluffy and soft pads.

thanks man! the silver paint idea sounds like a great idea but i think keep way it is. first thing i would do to these is replace the pads and possible recable since the cable is super worn and i had to re-kink it to prevent from right channel kicking out.

also by fluffy pads you mean big fluffy dice don't you? ;)

Those could work if I could sew something onto them in the center, I'd say a disc.

Seriously though, they are too large and get unsealed by my square jaw.

quick update!

couple days ago i received a modified SRD-4 energizer box by dbel84. yes it was originally a electret transformer box but somehow he made it where it would work with electrostatics so i can drive the sr-202 and lambda pros.

of course my set-up is foobar2000 ASIO 64-bit>Echo audiofire 2>H/K 725 preamp > H/K 770 dual-mono power amp > SRD-4 >Musical Pink Panthers(stax lambda pro).

all i was expecting was a bass increase the most from the benefit of using my power amps and it did improve the slam/impact a good of amount. improved it's extension over the dedicated SRM-212 amp as well. i notice bit more dynamics as well and stereo separation was better i think. much better center. Microdetails and clarity are the same. i can hear every instrument separated with no glaring. one thing for sure is i have ton more headroom in volume as well. i never heard the pros get driven like this before gain wise.

of course with this box i let it sit for few minutes. while i notice charge right away and difference. letting it sit for few minutes increased it's overall output but that's bout it.

the SR-202 improve good amount as well. i never knew it had that much impact in the bass! it's more then the pros. i notice clearer treble as well and very good separation. sounded more open. it just didn't seem as clear as the pros overall. the pros sounds bit more refined overall as well but i really dig the sound of the sr-202.

midrange wise i notice bout the same going from the srm-212 to my h/k 770. the yamaha m-45 with the kenwood C-2 pre gave it bit warmer sound with more impact. seem to shelve the treble down cause the pros seemed darker as well off that set-up compared to the srm-212 and h/k 770 with matching h/k 725.

this is all from a quick listen. will give more listen tonight hopefully.

EDIT: i realized my kenwood C2 pre loudness switch was on. that's what made it warm sounding. now it sounds nice and clear.

OF COURSE!   ;)

How are things holding up when you push the gain hard?  Are things staying in control or getting a little wooly and wild?  Says lots-o-STAX guys, the crappy amps will loose control when pushed, so interested to hear how the energizer holds out.

BTW, nice job dBel!

Very interesting stuff, thanks for sharing.
