I've honestly not encountered anything quite like this sound in IEMs before, so if it's driver flex it's not like any I've heard. The FADs make a crunchy sort of noise when inserting into the ear (almost like the "Stax fart"). This on the other hand is a very light clinking noise, like the sound of a wire gently taping the ceramic housing. In my case it doesn't just occur during insertion, but whenever I shake my head forward and back or while walking, basically whenever there's some force applied to them. It's really faint however, so I don't notice it most of the time unless I'm focusing on it.

I talked to Gavin, the guy who runs Tralucent Audio, and he said he had a similar issue with another pair of earphones. Apparently in his case it was a little wire that wasn't fully secured knocking against the side of the housing. I've checked the screens on the earpiece, and nothing else seems loose that I can see, so maybe he's right.

I sent an e-mail to Sennheiser customer support. I asked if they could exchange my set for a new one since I got it from Amazon.co.jp and these don't seem to be available in the US yet. As Fitcherama says, it's a minor thing but just knowing it's there kind of bugs me, especially given the price of these. I would have just returned them to Amazon, but they're sold out and not expecting any more for months. If I have to live with it it's not a big deal, but if it can be replaced then that would be nice.

When paired with the UHA-6S these IEMs absolutely delight me; they have some of the nicest midrange of any universal I've ever heard.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Sennheiser finally replied to my service request. Basically, I asked if they could do something about the clinking in the left earpiece.

The response I got back was curious. The rep. said that the IE800 was "not released anywhere in the world yet" so he was unsure where I could have gotten mine from, that it may be counterfeit. That's bullshit, because just listening to them I can tell they're not counterfeit. I've got all Sennheiser's documentation and serial #s, and I purchased them *direct* from Amazon.co.jp and not a third party seller. Also plenty of other head-fiers own these now.

WTF? Are Sennheiser employees really that misinformed? Now I'm reluctant to send these in because I'm wondering if they could even replace them given their denial that it exists in the wild yet.

Wow, your IE800's are even rarer than the Orpheus as they technically don't exist!  You should totally try to sell them on the used market for 10K.

These are in my ears right now. Here are some early thoughts:

-> They look like they were designed by HR Giger, which is a plus in my book.
-> Ergonomics aren't great. Fit is okay for me, but cable is not detachable and somewhat microphonic. Can't wear these upside down due to the angle of their insertion.
-> Build seems solid. However I've noticed a "clinking" noise in the left unit when I touch the ports in the back. Driver flex?
-> Sonically these strike me as refined on first listen. Bass is a bit too prominent for my liking, though not as problematic as the balance on the IE8. Midbass doesn't encroach into the midrange. Lower bass seems more emphasized.
-> Highs are detailed but not overly aggressive; slightly sibilant on a few tracks, but not harsh and falls within my comfortable range of tolerance. Sounds a little thin at times however.
-> Mids are simply stunning, extremely refined and detailed but possessing a natural sounding timbre. They have an effortless quality. Vocals almost sound like they do on electrostats with that "out of thin air" quality.

Overall a good effort from Sennheiser IMHO, but the pricetag is a little steep (getting into customs territory). Biggest sonic issue is the bass emphasis which can be distracting for critical listening, though might be desirable if you're using them in a noisy environment. Ergonomics are also not great, and this clinking noise in the left earpiece is weird too.

Four out of five Cardas neodymium infused high fives.

I have exact same tinkling in the L/H earpiece! Very subtle, but hear it when inserting bud. Only 2 days new. Should I send them back? Very expensive so I don't want to accept inferior set! Otherwise my commuting has just become my favourite part of the day!
I'm also on the fence with burning in? Not hammering the IE800's but do you think a burn in is physical or mental? I lean towards the latter.

I also have the same issue with a metallic sound, not so subtle, when I insert the left earbud. No problem though when listening to music and moving my head (or chewing). But this is a bit annoying and worrying. Any news on your side regarding this issue?

I had mine replaced, and the new pair is perfect.

What a fantastic sound!!!
You realize even more when comparing with other types of headphones or IEM.

I do not regret at all buying them.

Were it not for the fit, they'd be quite good. Not exactly the best around, but reasonably close.

I picked up a pair at a place with a 60-day return policy. My impressions after a few days are pretty close to MF's. These are really nice. I might end up reducing the vent with a little clear tape to reduce the sub-bass (or at least play with it enough to know that I could reduce it if needed). I'm usually a fan of sub-bass, though, so we'll see. I've also tried Rin's suggestion of a non-woven thin material from ebay for the highs. I'll need to experiment a bit with it, I'm not sure I'll need it.

The highs have settled into something which are slightly thin but quite liveable, timbre doesn't draw my attention in a negative way on cymbals, the mids are very nice and clear.

Unfortunately, I may end up keeping these!
