Beyerdynamic DT48S 5 ohms
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:17:48 AM »

The reason why I start this thread is simple: this weird headphone will be measured by Analixus and Purrin.

What follows are some subjective impressions and pictures to give you an idea of what this headphone is about. The DT48S is special DT48 in the evolution of the DT48-series. On the added picture you see a DT48E-25 on the left and DT48S-5.

Set up: Sony CDP-750 + Little Dot mk V (015/100 volume) + DT48S

Music: Bowie The Singles Collection (EMI 1993) tracks "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure" and "Day In Day Out"

I assume everyone is familiar with these singles. I use a simple 16 bit system given my K500 sounds just right in this set up. I was surprised the DT48 went easy with the mk V given this Beyer can be quite demanding of the amplifier. Of course my listening habits have changed regarding volume levels: they lowered.

In short:
- I can follow the bass lines although the sub bass is difficult to trace sometimes.
- Mid bass is there, a touch light.
- No warmth, just a very detailed and clinical sounding midrange.
- The vocal range is emphasized.
- The transition from midrange to highs sounds just like the midrange. Synthesizers/drums/ shine with this headphone.
- Compared to the K500 the DT48S sounds uneven and unforgiving.
- Loudness infected music most likely will sound terrible.
- This headphone gives me the being-there-feeling with a lack of bass and a brightness that annoys me.
- Music sounds quite fast, taking away from my usual enjoyment with my smooth sounding K500.
- At this point the K500 is on my head again. Smooth, warmer and much more enjoyable.

Regarding the impressions above, just realize this is a dynamic headphone from the sixties that was used with Nagra equipment in original state, still. Weird headphone...

More to come...

Interesting. I've always wanted to see this headphone measured by Purrin. I'll be anxiously waiting to see the results.

Will a pair of DT48E be measured alongside for comparison?

the older version of the DT48A, which has pink (due to aging?) and blue cups, has alot less bass than those two xD

ironically, if there is such a word, i liked the sound of the old DT48A than the E and the S. The S sounds very off to me. Maybe because of my source and amp when I listened to it

I don't know which version I listened to (I think E...it belonged to Uncle Erik) but I hated it!

Why'd you hate it Milos?  I'd like to hear these someday.  The impressions out there are some of the weirdest for any headphone.  I imagine them being very basslite, thin sounding with a good but weird midrange, maybe some honk, and super 2D flat soundstage but good imaging/separation.

That's pretty similar to what I remember hearing.  Rolled off extremes, kinda wonky mids, grainy as hell, little to no soundstaging

It was a ZD.  I liked the 240DF a lot though.

My DT48E-25 is long gone. For some reason I kept the S-version because the S at least sounded like something I could work with. Despite the fact that the S does certain things right its tonality gets to me within half an hour...
