I'm in the market for a Windows ultrabook. Hoping to replace my desktop so I can shrink my desk (which leaves more room for audio gear).

I'm drawn to the Asus Zenbooks and Samsung Series 9's purely from a design standpoint. Sadly, I'm reading about them and the Zenbooks seem to have QC issues (and a terribly slow SSD), and the Series 9's are even more expensive than comparable Apple products.

What else should I be looking at or avoiding? Hoping to keep it around 1.5K if possible.

What's the issue with the zenbook build/QC? At least for the slow SSD, you can swap out the hard drive on the UX32 for a proper SSD.

Anandtech is generally among the trusted sources I use.

As far as I can see the latest gen Zenbook is probably the best. I'm not currently satisfied with the current state of ultrabooks to invest yet. (That includes the MB Air and 13 Pro.)

Lenovo X1 Carbon.  There is a new touchscreen version if that matters.  Plus a twist model but the hinge scares me a bit.  Sometimes there's 10% off or special Lenovo sales.  I'm waiting for Haswell which will double the GPU power.

Second the X1 Carbon recommendation. Very nice. Plus, Lenovo Thinkpads are pretty much the quietest notebooks you can buy. I HATE noisy laptop fans.

Good stuff. Looks like the X1 Carbon is the one to get. I'll hold off until the Haswell models come out as well.

Anyone tried Windows 8 without a touch screen? A touch screen is pretty much a necessity right?

http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/21/3792974/google-reportedly-working-with-motorola-to-design-its-own-x-phone

Quote (selected)
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is taking its smartphone fate into its own hands, working with Motorola to build its own device known internally as the "X Phone." Due sometime next year, the new device is said to not replace the work Google-owned Motorola is pursuing with its line of Droid devices, but to serve as another product altogether — and that after the X Phone is complete, a so-called "X Tablet" will be coming up next.

The individual reportedly in charge of the project is a former Google product manager, Lior Ron. Ron is said to have previously specialized in mapping — obviously a huge area of focus given Apple's recent stumbles. The project is said to be particularly concerned with providing users with a high-quality camera and great photo software, something the Nexus line has never really been known for.

Other technologies that are said to have been explored as part of the X Phone project are bendable screens and ceramic materials that would make the device more durable. It's not specified whether the X Phone design is finished, or if either design element will be present in the final device. Image and gesture-recognition software from Viewdle — which Motorola Mobility acquired in October — is also being integrated into the phone.

While Google has been able to put forth its own line of Nexus-branded Android phones and tablets, the company hasn't delved into the world of hardware production itself (save for the short-lived Nexus Q). Taking advantage of its Motorola acquisition to make its own devices would put it in direct competition with Android OEMs, a situation that Microsoft is now confronting with the Surface tablet. Still, after many — including The Verge itself — found the Nexus 4 lacking in certain areas, taking matters into its own hands could be one of the most effective ways for Google to provide the ultimate Android experience.

Glad to see Google taking things into their own hands and making phones without all of the added Android overlays from manufacturers. TouchWiz and HTC Sense ruins Android more often than not.

The Nexus 4 was a huge step in the right direction -- premium device for $300 off-contract that they could sell directly to consumers and side stepping the wireless carriers from delaying their updates and adding their own BS into the mix. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus is like 3 updates behind, which is ridiculous.

No, not necessary.  I run it on my desktop.  Takes some adjustment from 7, there is a desktop UI. it just lacks a start button.  At this point, I feel the positives outweigh any negatives.  I might consider the touch version of the X1 as I detest touchpads.

anyone else here enjoy rolling Linux distros?

Unity is growing on me, but "cinna"mint 14 (nadia) is one of the best I've used...
The new "Beefy Miracle" Fedora 17 is great, as well. Stable for sure, as is expected of a RH release...

I really can't wait for Mageia 3 to hit RC stage though!
(Mandriva and Schulz can suck it. The community already took control of that distro's future through Mageia and is creating one of the most modern installs to date!)

Also, I find the Dell XPS 12 to be one of the best implementations of tablet/desktop fusion.  [solid-metal outer flip-hinge design is pure sex; So much faster than trying to manually flip like on the Yoga...]
