Mjolnir vs BHA-1
« on: September 28, 2012, 05:15:20 AM »

Got my Mjolnir and Gungnir Tuesday as most of you know. Been running both non-stop since I got them set up. Hadn't planned on saying much this soon, but by chance I found this really cool song I sort of got addicted to and listened to it through the Mjolnir and HD800 57 times before I realized it, so I thought since I was obviously intimately familiar with it I would turn on the BHA-1 and let it get warmed up while I listened to the Mjolnir a few more times. I've been enjoying the sound of the Mjolnir, but I hadn't used the Gungnir with the BHA-1 yet so I couldn't be sure if it was the Gungnir's improvement over the Bifrost or the Mjolnir or both.

I listened in a bit more detail for those last few repeats on the Mjolnir and then as quickly as I could swapped cables to the BHA-1 and played the song. Turns out my detailed listening on the Mjolnir was unwarranted. In just the first minute of the BHA-1 I recognized greater bass quantity, cleaner bass, significantly better detail, smoother highs and greater sense of atmosphere and soundstage. It was like someone flipped a sound quality switch going from the Mjolnir to the BHA-1. It's so one sided I'm going to have a hard time giving the Mjolnir a fair shake the rest of the way, but I'll keep listening.

I wonder if I should comment on MOSFET mist...

Maybe best to leave it be.   :D

So does your BHA-1 sound as you remembered it?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Maxvla. I'm interested in hearing how they fare against each other as you grow more accustomed to each sound.

A bit off topic, but have you compared the Bifrost to the Gungnir yet?

Yes, on the attack, but still smooth. I haven't noticed any variance in the sound like you guys mentioned. The Mjolnir at the moment sounds great, but polite.

I'll compare the DACs later. Priority right now is amps as I'm 99% sure I will keep the Gungnir and if I decide to keep the BHA-1 I will need to send the Mjolnir back within return time.

Really?  Polite is not a word I associate w/ the Mjolnir.  It's about as polite as a few shots of Tequila.   :)p5

I know this is unlikely, but would it be possible that the Gungnir might be a better match with the BHA-1 compared to the Mjolnir for your tastes with the specific headphone you're using?

Would you be able to try the comparison with any darker headphones like an HD650 or LCD2/3?

Also +1 on the bifrost/gungnir comparison  :)

Now you know why I was confused when you guys said the Bryston was relaxed and the Mjolnir was aggressive. The Bryston is one of the most aggressive amps I've ever heard.

My only headphones are the UERM and HD800.

My only headphones are the UERM and HD800.

I asked because my opinion on the Mjolnir so far is that I think it'd match better with headphones like the LCD2 simply because of the way it was tuned (even though it's supposedly very neutral). I have one too, but I haven't had a chance to compare it to a BHA-1. I know that my HE-6 is a better match with an Apex Peak though. Thanks for your impressions.

The game's afoot. The Mjolnir grew a balanced/SE switch and didn't tell me! I swear it wasn't there before...  :)p8
