any impressions with the lcd2.2..is it as bad as lcd3?

LCD2.2 is pretty good now.  Very reliable, consistent good sound, variation has been tamed.  If I had one I would have put a $450 tag on a proper one.

Thanks for your reply...good to hear that the 2.2 is consistent now...the intersample sound signature variation is very bothering especially for such a pricey headphone..

Anax, is Headroom's pair at fault (old veiled pair) or is my pair just above average, like purrin's pair was before it died?

Yours seems to sound like an average one.  The LCD3s that outlived their welcome w/ purrin were amazingly good till the inevitable happened.  If you need to eq anything and are only good for bass they don't sound like those at their best.

I actually don't consider bass 'impact' that great on the LCDs tbh.  They can be boomier but my HD800s always hit harder and sharper on my rig.

Was just at a meet where I got to compare the LCD2.2 and the HD800 and came away with the same conclusion.  Not saying the rig was up to par with yours, but I definitely walked away wanting an HD800, and I lost all desire to get an LCD1, 2, 3, 4, whatever.

I have read comments elsewhere about the 'textured/layered bass' of the LCDs and that the dynamics (in general) sound 'one note' in comparison...frankly i have no idea what one note or textured bass sounds like...i can only vaguely imagine..anyway I was under the (purely read not from experience) impression that the LCDs reproduced bass best..now I'm confused

Tyll thought it was the other way around with the HD800 sounding more one-note. I kind of know what everyone means after hearing both.

I'll borrow an LCD3 and measure the harmonic distortion, D2, D3, D4, etc. that should explain more.

the T1 does swivel.  It's a little hidden mechanism.

Really? That's pretty cool. I never noticed it when I was borrowing the T1!

Going to get the HE-500 and the Paradox then onto speakers again.  Or pour all of my money into LED flashlights, in which I've spent $2k already...

When I get my Paradox, I can come over to visit. I cannot believe you can spend 2k on flashlights.

RE: HD800 vs LCD-2 bass...

I find the LCD does do bass texture a bit better but the HD800 is ahead in impact while having less quantity. It has to do with the LCD's relatively limited dynamic range that gives that perception that the bass doesn't quite slam hard enough (while still having good texture and quantity). The whole frequency range seems stacked on top of each other occupying a smaller amount of space so when the bass hits, it doesn't seem removed enough from the mids. The HD800 has more dynamic range so the bass "jumps" out of the soundscape more. This gives me the impression of more slam.

Kinda hard to explain, but I had similar thoughts about the HFI580 after reading on the forums that it had the best bass in its class.

How does a headphone's driver affect dynamic range?

@QH : spot on about the LCD bass, I had the same impression.

The limited dynamic range of LCD-2 is due to the damping they have used. Too much damping limits the dynamic range of orthos in my experience.
