I considered HD650 pretty bright and unveiled sounding too when I heard it, I had the silver version as well.  Hard to hold that opinion on head-fi though.  I think everyone might be used to years and years of posts referring to older HD650s?  I'm not sure.  I didn't really consider its upper mids to be a grand-canyon though, that's moreso HE-400 if anything.

What's wrong w/ the Bryston BHA-1 in balanced mode w/ high gain?  The O2 got creamed by it.

Let me go dig out the HD650, I put it away.

Oddly enough, the Burson is a rather colored amp that's not bright at all and I'm sure would not be the king of measures.

Nothing is wrong with the Bryston.

Let me know if your driver is black or silver.  Sennheiser revoiced the HD650 recently.  The old version is black and the new version is silver.  The new version is quite a bit brighter.
If your driver is black, that would explain the darkness, because the Bryston is a fine amp, shouldn't be colored, and should have great synergy with the new 650.  If it's silver, I have no idea what the problem is.

Also, pop off your earpad and tell me your serial number.

Driver's silver, no discernible serial number on either side....

Doesn't appear to old and beat up.  You guys didn't do the Apuresound mod did ya?   :)p17

I'll try it w/ my O2 when I visit it at purrin's.

i had a new version with white/silver drivers and i find it dark as well, so i sold it. it is unmodded though. it gets brighter when i remove the foam pads and the stuffings behind the driver.

Very odd.  Perhaps there was a silent revision?  When Marv gets less busy, I will send my HD650s in for analysis.  I like to know exactly what I'm listening to anyway.
If I were to draw a line to explain what my HD650's sound like FR-wise, it would be something like this:

Mine are only a week old, and HD650's burn in brighter, so they'll get even brighter than they are!

It's weird.  They're bright cans, except for the mids, which are dark.  They sound essentially exactly like Marv's CSD looks.
I bought them off of Amazon, so no warranty.  I wish I had known about razordogdeals when I bought these.
