Are these transports generally better than most USB inputs? Would it be worth it to get this over, say the $100 USB option on the Schiit DACs?
The consensus I've seen on most computer audio forums is that it really depends on the DAC.  If you know someone local you can borrow an Audiophilleo from, you can probably sort it out quickly.

If anyone knows a good guide for DIY USB cables (particularly good cables and connectors to use), I'd appreciate it.

Some DACs already use the XMOS based USB receiver / SPDIF converter. So definitely don't get one if it already does. This thing may be worth it if you can DIY for something like the Schiit DACs. I'm not sure what Schiit uses for their $100 USB module. Knowing Jason, I doubt they would use a crappy solution and probably picked an async USB solution that sounded just as good or almost just as good to avoid paying extra for the XMOS chip and keeping costs down.

The board arrived today. Its teeny.

Don't have a BNC connector yet.

Am open to suggestions on panel mount (non-PCB mount) true 75 OHM BNC connectors if you guys are aware of any.

Mouser: 523-112425

So you can wire the SPDIF output straight to BNC and get a 75 ohm output?

LIstening to this now feeding the Assemblage DAC 3.1 via a BNC jack. Found some 75 ohm coax cable at the local surplus store.

SOunding pretty darn good.

This might make me get rid of my CD player finally. Still need to build an external shunt regulator power supply for it and see i can get some flexible easier to work with cable.

Had to install the kernel streaming component on foobar for bit perfect output.

HDCD works great on it now ..that's how i can confirm that its bit perfect...awesomeness!

Has got to be the best bang for buck among USB to I2S/SPDIF converters on the market today.  XMOS L1 based..for 160$ all said and done is brilliant value IMHO

damn impressed by this piece of gear. Better transport than my Cary CDP noticeably..even with just the USB supply. The Cary CDP now HAS to go.

Any idea if an older DAC like a Parasound D/AC-1600 can accept a I2S signal? It has SPDIF, optical and AES inputs so most likely that seems- no...

However it was designed to be used together with CDP's and reads even HDCD data.

I don't think the PMD100 chip in that DAC is I2S input capable... I wish though, I have the same DAC sitting on my shelf right now.

What do you think of it? I'm currently torn between getting a newer Delta-Sigma or buying Currawong's D/AC-1600. Still calculating if I'll be able to swallow all the logistics costs it would take to get one of these from Japan to Latvia.
