portable audio is terrible
« on: July 27, 2015, 03:42:34 PM »

everything is overpriced and awful, I think i might just be expecting to much

thought on the t51p one of the few cans I havn't tried yet, I prefer cans over iems because of the ear fatigue, but mostly use iems because of the sound isolation. Only decent iems ive heard are the UERM, although they are comparable to like a $300 headphone openback. Still need to hear Layla and Angies though.

You need a remold or better upstream. The UERM can trounce many open headphones over $1000 easily. If you think any of the Shure flagship headphones are competitive we have nothing more to say to each other.  :)

I'd actually disagree with that.  Up until the highest tier of full size headphones, I usually prefer IEMs to similarly priced full sizes.  IEMs tend have a more cohesive presentation with better separation and imaging than all but the best full size headphones.  They do lose out in the size of the soundstage though.

What in specific are you looking for in a portable 'phone?

That is the main question...

soundstage and treble on iems I find is there biggest downfall. Treble is always metallic and annoying and the soundstage is non existent.

I am an hd800 nut btw so that is saying something I think

Yes indeed. Do you want a small sized portable HD800?

Is that your first specification?

soundstage

I think you're screwed then.  Absolute size of soundstage isn't something IEMs do very well.

Anyone else know of any exceptions?

what about portable cans? I tried pm-3 but I found the isolation wasn't good enough for portable use and they were a little boring sounding. I heard good things about the t51p considering they are a a tesla beyer can I find that really suprising lol

Portable gear is ultimately a compromise IMO. The biggest quality to be sacrificed is soundstage. AK Jr - a deent portable amp - UERM can get me 90% of satisfaction though.

I strongly disagree because portable doesn't have soundstage, portable = terrible.

Strongly second Anax's opinion that UERM easily triumph a lot of shitty overpriced full-size cans.

So what do you consider a full-size open-back "equivalent" to UERM?
