electrostatic/stax damping?
« on: May 03, 2012, 10:55:47 AM »

hey, there guys. i just have quick question here. i have pair of lambda pros coming my way pretty soon just to hold on and borrow for while for a friend since told me i can hold on them as well since has ton more stuff from japan coming, but told me he had to take the mineral wool sheet that the pros use out cause of it decaying after so many years. i was thinking of going to home dept and picking up some rockwool/mineral wool and try making my own sheets in a way, but wondering if anywhere else you guys might know where i can actually get sheets or something similar for them?

i have the SR-202's here as well that i recently took the decaying sponge foam out and i think it improved them very well. don't know if it's in my head or what but i think the sr-202's became bit more clearer and the imaging improved a bit as well. so i might try the lambda pro's completely open at first to see how it sounds first. kinda psyched here a bit cause always wanted try pair of pro's since i like headphones with bit of airness besides good midrange tonality(why i like the sr-202 lot. has very good midrange). heard the sr-202's are almost exact clone of the pros except without the brightness  so i might end up liking them lot as well maybe.

what do you guys think work well? also wondering one more thing. i wonder if there is way to extend the distance from the pads to the drivers? seem the pads are glued/sticked on. right now the sr-202 uses pair of pro pads with double sided tape. gonna pick some more up this weekend though to replace it.

I don't know anywhere you can buy mineral wool in small quantities.

well i know my home dept and lowes does with small bats, but i was wondering if possible to find flat sheets. i know fiberglass can come flat at different thickness cause meant for attic uses but i was thinking that would be very bad idea since i was thinking fiberglass due to small glass particles can penetrate the plastic protective cover of the drivers that's used to protect it from dust, hair, ect. rockwool and mineral wool would be safer to use for this. if it was planer or dynamic i would have no issue with using fiberglass for the enclosure, but since these are electrostatics here i have to rethink some different possible ways to deal with it.

I'm interested if you find any. My SR-Lambda are nude on the back, with the mineral wool removed. Going from memory they pretty much sound the same as my SR-Lambda with the wool in place.

will do. going to the store tomorrow to look around since i have to pick up some r-30 fiberglass rolls anyways to finish my listening area for some bass traps for sub-bass region(i still have slight off center with bass below 40hz). i'll see if i can utilize the rockwool/mineral wool they have at home dept. i have slight idea on what to do drawing it out in my head, but still need some time to explore more.

electrostatics are so sensitive to materials on the backside. i can have my hand few inches away from backside passing back and forth it'll alter the sound instantly so i have to make sure to experiment with correct measurements keep it balance between tonal balance and openness.

guys have any ideas on the pads though? i was thinking making/cutting strips of cardboard or something and double siding tape that to the frame to give more uprise and then double siding tape the pads to stick on the cardboard. you know, to distance the pads a bit to experiment and see how it'll sound. what you think?

Just make sure that tape creates a tight seal between the pads and the baffle. If you're using cardboard, make sure the material won't leak from the sides...

If you want to experiment with spacers for pads get some of that craft foam like what purrin and Anax use for their HD800 mods.

You can cut it to shape, glue it together in layers, and try different thickness.  I've done that kind of thing before on my T50RPs and mentioned it recently in the ortho roundup thread.

When experimenting and everything is rough cut and ghetto normal electrical tape works for keeping everything sealed and air tight.  If the pads are real leather you shouldn't let the tape stick to them.  If you put two pieces of electrical tape together sticky side to sticky side you can make a stretchable gasket around the edge of the pad and get an airtight seal without getting any adhesive on the leather.

Let me know if you found some good stuff. I could use some for my own projects too. :p
